- Americans Hate Tingle: The film is considered So Okay, It's Average everywhere else, but it's despised in Ireland, and usually held up as one of the worst examples of Oireland stereotyping; non-Irish actors doing unconvincing accents, drunken brawls, every other character being a farmer (although Shannon is the rare time Irish gentility is depicted in film).
- Awesome Music: John Williams' score. All of it. Especially "The Land Race".
- Cliché Storm: For some, it hits way too many familiar Melodrama cliches; poor plucky male lead, privileged Spoiled Sweet love interest who gives up her wealth for a life of freedom especially.
- Questionable Casting: Virtually everyone agrees that Tom Cruise was woefully miscast in the lead role; not least because of his inability to do accents.
