YMMV / Faces of Death

Go To

  • Contested Sequel: The second film is either considered the best film in the series for being mostly made up of real footage, or one of the weaker ones for being more subdued instead of having the over-the-top gore featured in most of the other ones.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: The first film was actually targeted at Japanese audiences, with whom the Mondo genre was taking off in the video market, but it actually proved very popular in its native America, leading to the sequels.
  • Once Original, Now Common: In the age of internet video sharing sites that are filled with graphic death & gore from accidents, terrorists, cartels and just random acts of murder & violence, in high definition video quality, Faces of Death doesn't have the impact it once did and those who grew up with the net may not understand what the big deal was.
  • Special Effect Failure:
    • If the fact that the "suicide jumper" in the third film happens to look exactly like Dr. Flellis doesn't clue you in that the scene's faked, the laughably unconvincing dummy that is seen falling off the building will.
    • It's very easy to spot the re-enacted and/or faked footage, like the sacrificial victim whose "torso" isn't the same color as the rest of his skin or the suspiciously rubbery monkey head being cut open, complete with colored cauliflower for the brain itself. On the flip side, it's also just as easy to spot the stuff that isn't, like the scene of a coroner peeling back the skin on a corpse's head to access the skull, or of emergency workers picking up dismembered body parts (which sag and droop the way real flesh does, unlike stiff foam rubber) and scooping clotted blood and brain matter into plastic bags.
