YMMV / FLCL Grunge & Shoegaze

• Awesome Music: It's not FLCL without the Pillows.
• Crosses the Line Twice: The previous head of Keshibishi Group decapitated by a rival Yakuza is horrendous. But hilarious as the beheaded leader is fumbling around for his severed head like a missing pair of glasses with his subordinates trying to help him.
• Epileptic Trees: When the first trailer for Shoegaze was officially released, there were many who found Harumi's face, voice, and personality to be oddly similar to Haruko's, suggesting a possible connection between the two. The final episode reveals this to be false. Harumi was a completely different person prior to Shoegaze, but she, or rather he, isn't connected to Haruko, who doesn't even appear at all.
• Heartwarming Moments: Haruko giving Orinoko both a meteor to finish her father's sword and a ticket for the last space shuttle.
• Tainted by the Preview: When the trailer for Grunge came out, some fans didn't like the animation shifting to 3D and complain how it looks like a fan project or compare it with other two infamously CG animated animes, EX-ARM and Berserk (2016).
• The Woobie:
  • Shonari really has it rough. First his family had to flee their home planet because Medical Mechanica destroyed it, then his parents died and his brother had to raise him, he got sent to jail for standing up to his bullies at school, and his brother got involved with the yakuza and eventually died because of it. Poor kid really needs a hug.
  • Orinoko’s mother died when she was 12 and her father is sick. He eventually succumbs to his illness and then Orinoko learns the household robot she took her frustrations on actually holds his mother's consciousness after her father uploaded it into a robot body. Orinoko barely manages to place her mom's mind in a backup disk before her robot body shuts down and is destroyed along with her home by Medical Mechanica. But she arguably gets the happiest ending as she gets to leave the dying planet behind and start a new life on another, thanks to Haruko of all people.
