YMMV / Expelled from Paradise

  • Best Known for the Fanservice: When talking about this series, the conversation almost always begins and ends at Angela's barely-clothed self, to the point where more people are aware of Angela's "boob-socks" than of the series plot. Many first-time viewers were even surprised to discover that it was a mecha series (though its addition to the Super Robot Wars series has alleviated this for the most part). This situation was likely not helped, and may have been directly caused by, the film's advertising, which put just as much, if not more focus on Angela's bountiful chest than on the film's mecha or plot: this probably caused quite a bit of confusion with some viewers who went in thinking it would be an ecchi-comedy with some sci-fi elements, as opposed to a fairly serious sci-fi action movie.
  • Complete Monster: The High Officials of the seemingly utopian DEVA digital world deal with storage problems by "archiving" citizens deemed useless to isolated imprisonment. When the hacker Frontier Setter breaches their security, they order Agent Angela Balzac to hunt him down, and when Angela reports he merely wishes to speak to the people of DEVA, the Officials angrily archive her for refusing to destroy Frontier Setter.
  • Fan Nickname: Angela's surname, Balzac, isn't taken seriously by anime fans because it sounds obscene. Thus, she is comically called "Angela Ballsack".
  • Friendly Fandoms: Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Expelled from Paradise gained a shared fandom due to Masatsugu Saito doing the character deisgns of both works, with the game helping him and the movie gain Retroactive Recognition once this was apparent. The following elements incommon also help:
    • The similar After the End on Earth story beats of both works and designs of the male and female lead also contributed to both fandoms being able to invest themselves in both works.
    • Angela in particular shares Mythra's fandom due to their similar blond haired and white clothed appearance. Storywise, both also are from an advanced false paradise in space and are initially cold to the male lead before opening up.
    • Dingo shares his fandom with Rex's due to both being a Working-Class Hero from and experienced on Earth whose determined and somewhat cocky attitude to the female lead, along with his determination to help her, lets her open up to the world. In terms of design, while initially all they shared was spiky brown hair, the design for older Rex in Xenoblade Chronicles 3, especially his bearded appearance in a DLC trailer pass heavily for Dingo.
    • The shared fandom amongst the works and their leads lead to a Memetic Mutation that Angela and Dingo were just an older Mythra and Rex, the latter also falling under Hilarious in Hindsight thanks to older Rex from XC 3 resembling Dingo.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Masatsugu Saito did the character designs for this movie years before Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (which Graphinica coincidentally also worked on), which is why Angela looks like Mythra's long lost sister and why older Rex in Xenoblade 3 looks strikingly like Dingo.
