• Alternative Character Interpretation:
  • Is Mr. Hoppy a shy and loving man? Or a selfish Karma Houdini who blatantly lies to the woman he loves and remorselessly kidnaps her beloved pet?
  • From the 2015 adaptation, is Mr. Pringle as much of a jerk as he initially comes across? By the end he has alienated Mrs Silver, but he does seem to be more Obliviously Evil at points.
• Designated Hero: Mr. Hoppy doesn't really do anything particularly nice. He lies to Mrs. Silver continually and kidnaps her pet and repeatedly replaces it with a bigger tortoise so she will marry him. As she marries him and never finds out the truth, you could see it as The Bad Guy Wins. The 2015 BBC adaptation does take some effort to remedy this, by giving him a romantic rival, adding more kind moments and making it so he is at least called out on his behavior.
