YMMV / Escape Room (2019)

Go To

  • Alas, Poor Scrappy: The party tries their best to get Danny out of the ice and are very upset when he dies, and they get very angry at Ben, because his refusal to just hand over the lighter inadvertently caused Danny to fall through the ice in the first place.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Just days after this film came out, a fire at an escape room in Poland killed five people, leading to a safety crackdown from the Polish government. What makes it especially harsh is that the opening puzzle in this film involves the room being incinerated.
  • Like You Would Really Do It: Suuuure, you're going to kill off the clear Final Girl whose face is on the poster.
  • Moment of Awesome: Zoey outsmarting the game masters by destroying the cameras, thereby making it so they couldn't monitor her and didn't know she wasn't really dead.
Cleaner: Look at that. The oxygen mask. What the hell was she going to do with that?
Zoey: Breathe, bitch! (attacks the cleaners with a metal stand)
  • Nightmare Fuel: The premise alone of escape rooms that are designed to kill you make it borderline unsettling.
  • Paranoia Fuel: Let's just say an adrenaline junkie will be a bit unnerved to approach escape rooms after this...
  • The Scrappy: Danny, an overenthusiastic escape room nerd who is incapable of grasping the danger they're all in until it's too late and he's the first to die. Not helped he's basically a mocking stereotype of gamers.
  • Spiritual Adaptation: This is the closest we're going to get to another sequel to the movie Cube.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: During Room 2 the players start arguing whether one of them is the Game Master, having entered as a player to either sabotage them or to get a kick out of playing the games with them. In the end, none of them turn out to be working for Minos and the Game Master is just some random guy that none of them have seen before. While Ben, Zoey, and even Jason being the Game Master is ridiculous given the way they're introduced, and Danny and Amanda are equally unlikely because of their personalitiesnote , it might have been a really effective plot twist if Michael was the Big Bad who had been hiding his status as the Game Master all along by Obfuscating Stupidity instead of killing him off in a Senseless Sacrifice in Room 4. He's already sitting in Room 1 waiting for the other players to arrive when he's introduced, so it would have been very easy to frame him as an Unreliable Narrator when he relates his "backstory". It would also have been a rather effective subversion of Tyler Labine's reputation for playing Big Fun and Good Old Boy characters by revealing him to be a sadistic mastermind instead.
