  • Best Known for the Fanservice: Deep themes phooey: some folks are only interested in the nudity. To be fair, there is at least a lot of it, unlike other plays known for their nudity which turn out to have very little of it (such as Hair).
    • Particularly Daniel Radcliffe; the fact that he was nude on stage is the only reason a lot of people have ever heard of this play.
    • The 1977 film, meanwhile, gets this from both directions: On the one hand, the several lengthy frontal nude scenes for Peter Firth add up to some of the most extensive and explicit male nudity in any mainstream Hollywood film; on the other hand, a lot of people are more interested in the fact that Jenny Agutter gets naked, again.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Alan is guilty of horrific cruelty to animals, and shows an unpleasant personality in his dealings with Dr. Dysart. However, it's hard not to pity somebody as emotionally broken as Alan, particularly in view of his Dysfunctional Family life and the fact that he lacks the self-awareness, intellect, or strength of character to understand and deal with his strange religious and sexual obsessions.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The blinding scene that's the basis for the whole plot, especially in the film version which opts for a much more graphic and closeup depiction than what was ever used on stage.
