- Hates Everyone Equally: In regard to race. During the course of the movie, Shack yells “You black son of a bitch!” and “You cracker son of a bitch!” at stoker Coaly and brakeman Cracker, respectively.
- Mood Whiplash: The opening scene where Shack bludgeons a hobo on the head with a hammer, knocking him off the train and onto the tracks. The scene ends with a shot of the hobo lying dead and bloodied after being sliced in half by train wheels. Cut to happy, playful music over the opening credits.
- Values Dissonance: The Token Minority character being called Coaly feels regressive even for the time the movie came out in.
