• Angst? What Angst?: Emily isn't afraid to break the rules, despite knowing she could be punisched harshly if she were caught. She also isn't afraid to fight the dead, despite knowing that she could be rendered Deader than Dead by them, and this nearly happening multiple times. In the end she decides to stay a ghost and hunt the dead, despite all the dangers. keepo in mind that she is thirteen.
• Harsher in Hindsight: the fact that Sophie loses her family one by one is already a Tear Jerker, but in an interview the author admitted this happening to her previously. She was 24 when this started, but still.
• Inferred Holocaust: The book end on a somewhat happy note for Emily, but Dhragar is still out there and Emily is still his primary target. It's likely her life afterwards as a ghost will be short and brutal, fighting Dhragar's minion until one of them gets lucky.
• Strawman Has a Point: For all that Sisterius plays Dirty Coward at Emily's trial, the fact that her motives for hunting the dead were egoistic is true. Emily sees this and stays a ghost in the end so she can fight the dead.
