- Awesome Music: Rodrigo's exile is accompanied by El Destierro, a wonderously epic folk melody.
- Harsher in Hindsight: The Big Bad is an Islamic warlord dressed in black just like his armies and their aim is to conquer the land, threatening both Christians and other Muslims that refuse to fight for him. Despite the movie being made over a decade before they came into prominence, it's very easy to see the parallels between the bad guys and the actions of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. It doesn't help what Yusuf did mirrors one of ISIL's atrocities.
- Squick: Ben Yusuf ordering an old slave to be dismembered for not working hard enough because "his hands were tired".
