YMMV / Eating Raoul

Go To

  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Prolific comedic character actor John Paragon (best-known for playing Jambi The Genie) is a One-Scene Wonder as the unflappable, cranky owner of a sex toy shop who's Seen It All when it comes to perversion, further pushing Paul Bland to feel totally uncomfortable and out of his element when he goes shopping there. He's often viewed as the most memorable character outside Paul, Mary and Raoul.
  • Unintentional Period Piece:
    • The depiction of swinger culture as being a near-mainstream thing definitely dates it to the pre-AIDS era, and you can argue that it was maybe already outdated by 1982, but was still current enough to be Played for Laughs. Also, Paul and Mary having to do business by taking out a newspaper ad, then having prospective clients send them a letter seems very quaintly old-fashioned compared to websites like Craigslist and Backpage.
    • Paul being a wine connoisseur is meant to paint him as having an oddball, geeky hobby that he's obsessed with, and also to make him seem snobbish, which is very much in line with The '80s, when most people just drank wine to get drunk. Today, wine appreciation is a common pastime in America.
