YMMV / Eastern Exorcist

Go To

  • Breather Boss: Both campaigns contains an identical, Dumb Muscle-type boss, respectively Marquis Xi for Lu Yun-chuan and the Dark Boar General for Xiahou-xue. They're as slow as they're huge, lacks ability to jump and Goomba Stomp unlike other bosses their size, and as they're encountered rather later in-game the player is likely carrying power-ups and special attacks all over the inventory, allowing them to mince both of these bosses with little-to-no effort.
  • Moral Event Horizon: In Lu Yun-chuan's campaign, the traitor Zhang Huai-zhou crosses the line when he decides to backstab Lu one last time, after Lu decides to give him one last chance, with Xiaoyu performing a Taking the Bullet to save Lu. The fact that Zhang displays zero remorse over killing Xiaoyu and continues trying to attack his ex-friend, Lu Yun-chuan, makes slicing him apart in the subsequent boss battle all sorts of cathartic.
  • The Woobie: In both campaigns, of course.
    • Xiaoyu the hulijing easily has one of the most tragic backstories amongst the various (non-boss) NPCs, having lost her family to the Mandrill King, captured alive by exorcists, and moments after she's spared, used by the vile traitor Zhang Huai-zhou as a scapegoat causing her to be framed as an enemy to all the exorcists, when she's really a kind-hearted, gentle, benevolent fox spirit who doesn't want to hurt anyone. The fact that she's killed by the same traitor who framed her moments after clearing her name, and spends the last few seconds of her life telling Lu Yun-chuan not to give up hope, seals the deal.
    • The Shura boss, who used to be a human orphan starved to death, and assimilated by vengeful spirits into becoming a fearsome Tragic Monster.
    • In a case of Deliberate Values Dissonance, Chu the water demon turns out to be a widow and rape victim sentenced to death by the unjust legal system. It's hard to blame her (and even sympathize with her further) when she arises as a demon and starts killing everyone who wronged her, even when her powers grows beyond control and makes her want to massacre Hexi Village, considering it's a town filled with Apathetic Citizens.
    • For Xiahou-xue's campaign, the Demon Hound's backstory is absolutely gut-wrenching for dog lovers. It's a friendly, loyal Doberman who killed itself in order to be with it's master, only to be assimilated and turned into a monster. When it's curse is finally lifted, where the Hound is free of it's torment, it's killed by Tang Ming the exorcist who subscribes to Van Helsing Hate Crimes.
