YMMV / Eagle Vs Shark

Go To

  • Adorkable: Lily has a monotone-voice, works at a takeaway outlet despite being noticably older than the rest of the staff, plays dorky games, tells dorkier jokes and overall comes across as just the sweetest thing. Her brother fits the bill for similar reasons.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: The big fight. Jarrod finds out that Eric the Samoan is physically handicapped and apologetic. Jarrod attacks him anyway, only to be overpowered.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Overlapping with Funny Moments and Awesome Moments is the ending, where Jarrod realises he should treat Lily better when she tells him she's leaving without him. Jarrod meets her at the busstop with some freshly-picked lillies, remembering that she liked the flower she was named after. The funny and awesome kick in when you remember that Eric the Samoan's garden had lillies in them, implying that Jarrod finally got his revenge, however petty it may have been.
  • Hollywood Homely: The conventionally handsome Jemaine Clement plays the awkwardy-dressed Jarrod. Loren Horsely is also quite attractive even though her looks are toned down.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Jarrod is a twat at the best of times, but when we find out his brother committed suicide (and his mother is entirely out of the picture), it becomes clear that he's struggling to cope with reality. The rest of his family don't have a high opinion of him either, which would explain his desperate need to prove himself. After all of his martial arts training, he still doesn't get his triumphant victory over his school bully, which causes him to just break down as he realises he's wasting his life.
  • Spiritual Successor: It's not hard to view Eagle vs Shark as a sequel to Napoleon Dynamite, since they both feature deluded nerds, meek love interests and rude relatives in a small town, only now everyone is out of high school.
  • Sweet Dreams Fuel: Lily and her brother Damon are close enough to share a bedroom together. While they're both a bit weird, their relationship is still quite heartwarming, especially since Damon is the oly person who doesn't take Lily for granted.
  • Vindicated by History: The film was considered So Okay, It's Average on arrival due to the onslaught of quirky indie rom-coms coming out at the time. In the years after Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement gained stardom, Eagle vs Shark has managed to gain a small cult following.
  • The Woobie: Lily all the way. Jarrod treats her like an object whose only two purposes are to impress his family with her (non-existent) talents and to put up with his wangst. One stand-out moment is when Lily's manager has to lay off a member of staff, and picks a name out of the hat to show he's not playing favourites. That name just so happens to be Lily's. Lily then discovers that all the names in the hat were hers.
