• Americans Hate Tingle: Duel Masters is yet another victim of the extremely "gatekeep-y" culture that surrounds the Western perception of card games, struggling to gain a foothold in a market saturated by the "big three" (Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Pokémon) before being axed altogether. This is a stark contrast to its status in Japan, where Duel Masters remains fiercely competitive with other card games in the country and continues to be among the top 10 best-selling card games in Japan to this day.
• Broken Base: The English dub. While most people consider it a funny Gag Dub, others think it's the main reason why the franchise wasn't able to gain traction outside of Japan. Since the main priority was making jokes and poking fun at anime clichés, it made the card game completely unintelligible. (This was one of the main reasons why the Yu-Gi-Oh card game became so popular; even in the 4kids version, they took the time to explain how the game worked), which alienated potential fans.
• Funny Moments: Pretty much everything involving Bucket Man in the English dub of "Charge", especially when he attempts to get his own catchphrase
  Bucket Man: When the going gets tough the bucket gets, galvanized? Oh that stunk!
• Hilarious in Hindsight: A Gag Dub about people taking a children's card game too seriously. Pretty eerie.
• Magnificent Bastard: Kokujo, he uses his mastery of psychological warfare to absolutely destroy Shobu in his first appearance. His main strategy involves letting the opponent have the upper hand for 80% of the duel in order to lure them into a false sense of security before moping the floor with them. The Gag Dub naturally lampshades this by having him constantly refer to himself as an "evil genius". He follows this up by almost successfully acting as a Spanner in the Works during the Temple run, coming within inches of defeating Shobu and moving on to take on Hakuoh.
• Seasonal Rot: The first season of the Gag Dub had more effort put into its voice acting and editing, making the later seasons seem inferior. (Each season was produced by a different company, so they put their own spin on the dub.)
• They Copied It, So It Sucks!: To this day, reviewers often dismiss the series as a mere "Yu-Gi-Oh! rip-off".
• Woolseyism:
  • The chapter books provided a unique spin by gradually introducing Shobu's Kaijudo abilities and not emphasizing the creatures being visualized with the exception of certain moments; for example, the duel against Jamira has Shobu briefly see Bolshack Dragon attack Jamira, explaining why he was actually knocked to the ground.
  • Several fans also argue the English dub of the first season is this, due to the original anime generally being considered an average "Yu-Gi-Oh" clone at best, the dubbers had fun with how cliched it was and engaged in heavy Lampshade Hanging at every opportunity and basically doing a Gag Dub a whole year before ADV would do their own Gag Dub of Ghost Stories.
