• Harsher in Hindsight: Jesse ending up in the hospital after having a near-fatal heart attack might seem hard to watch now especially with Robert Forster's October 11, 2019 death from brain cancer.
• Heartwarming Moments:
  • The whole town of Due East rallies around Mary Faith after she's suspended from school due to her pregnancy and strong arms the principal into letting Mary Faith graduate with the rest of her class.
  • At Mary Faith's graduation ceremony the girls who initially shunned her stuff pillows under their graduation outfits in solidarity.
• Tear Jerker: Michael is killed in a motorcycle accident without ever finding out about Mary Faith's pregnancy.
• Values Dissonance: Despite the movie's presumed 2000s setting, Mary Faith is pregnancy-shamed by the school's principal and there are mentions of Mary Faith considering going to a maternity home and being kicked out of school due to her pregnancy.
• The Woobie: Mary Faith is this in spades: she loses her first boyfriend and the first of her few friends in a motorcycle crash, becomes pregnant and has almost no support from most of the adults in her life and gets insulted by her uncle and is called out by the principal who then expels Mary Faith from school and won't allow her to attend her own graduation.
