YMMV / DuckTales (2017) S3 E6 "Astro B.O.Y.D.!"

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Was Inspector Tezuka being ungrateful by sternly telling Huey, Gyro, Gizmoduck, and B.O.Y.D. to leave Tokyolk, or was it her way of letting them go after proving Gyro and B.O.Y.D. were ultimately innocent?
  • Aluminum Christmas Trees: S'mores Day is indeed a real thing in the US, falling on August 10.
  • Character Rerailment: For those who prefer Gyro's characterization in the comics and original series, this episode shows that his personality used to be the same as those iterations until the incident with 2BO made him more cynical. And once everything is resolved, he seems to regain some of his old idealism.
  • Fanfic Fuel: How did B.O.Y.D. end up that landfill to be picked up by Mark Beaks? Judging by the high number of his memories, he underwent a lot after nearly destroying Tokyolk. And given how strict Inspector Tezuka is, there's no way the Tokyolk police was going to just dump him in a landfill after stopping his rampage.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • When Gyro was first introduced, the board of directors sarcastically asked if his latest invention at the time (Lil' Bulb) would turn evil. At the time it was a funny joke since Lil Bulb did go evil. However considering the massive trauma and stigma he has from 2BO, this takes on a harsher tone considering that the board almost certainly knows of Gyro's little "mistake". Though the sting is taken out by the fact that Lil' Bulb is good now.
    • Louie's pulling a Tomato in the Mirror on B.O.Y.D. and making him go haywire in "Happy Birthday, Doofus Drake!" is a lot less funny now that we know about B.O.Y.D.'s full background as a robot who wants to Become a Real Boy.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Gyro retroactively becomes one with this episode. He was an optimistic young scientist in the past until his first machine (supposedly) malfunctioned and he was made a Persona Non Grata in Tokyolk as a result, transforming him into the cynical scientist he is today.
  • Rewatch Bonus: Several of Gyro's actions in previous episodes make a lot more sense with the reveal of his backstory.
  • Strawman Has a Point:
    • Inspector Tezuka spends the majority of her screentime being openly hostile and untrusting towards Gyro, B.O.Y.D., and Gizmoduck despite the fact that they did nothing illegal and even helped take down three criminals during their time in Tokyolk. However, the episode also makes clear that the last time Gyro was in Tokyolk and created B.O.Y.D., the latter went on a destructive rampage across the city that would realistically have left a high amount of property damage and put numerous civilian lives in harm's way until Tezuka took him down, so her hostility towards them is mostly out of concern that history will repeat itself with their return to her city. Unfortunately, this is exactly what happens when Akita regains control over B.O.Y.D. and causes him to do battle with Gizmoduck, and while Akita is ultimately defeated and B.O.Y.D. breaks free of his control, it doesn't change the fact that two creations of Gyro's have caused panic and destruction in Tokyolk, so her orders for them to leave the city at once is really a get-out-of-jail-free card compared to the mountain of legal trouble Gyro would've faced from the city.
    • While Bully Beagle is a complete jerk about it, he is right about Huey acting a bit too by-the-book for something as trivial as making s'mores. Adding other ingredients such as donuts and cookie dough to s'mores may not be the best choice nutritionally, but it's not uncommon for people (especially children) to add additional fixings to make "loaded s'mores" so Bully didn't do anything wrong.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Inspector Tezuka, even after she is given solid evidence that B.O.Y.D and Gyro were innocent, doesn't even bother apologizing for hostile treatment towards them and coldly tells them to leave her city at once, which includes Gizmoduck and Huey.
