YMMV / Duck and Cover

Go To

  • Memetic Mutation: The entire concept of "Duck and Cover" itself has become so well known, that even people in the 2010s can probably recognize it—despite growing up in an era where nuclear bomb safety was nowhere near a priority. Active shooter drills are probably the nearest modern equivalent.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The whimsical nature of the cartoon almost makes it easy to forget the narrator is describing what was essentially a worst-case scenario for the times: Global Nuclear War. The narration and visuals are able to back it up, despite being animated as something directed at children—starting with describing the initial detonation as "[a] bright flash! Brighter than the sun! Brighter than anything you've ever seen!", and the visuals narrated with a disturbingly accurate depiction of the shockwave flinging things into the air, pulverizing buildings and snapping trees like toothpicks, wrecking everything in its path. And remember, this is describing a place where there is still a chance of survival. One shudders to think of what it's like at ground zero, where survival chances are a flat zero.
