YMMV / Dropsy

Go To

  • Complete Monster: The S-Corporation CEO is the cruel brother of the kindhearted Dropsy, who killed his other brother and stepfather in the past and mounted their heads on his wall in his secret room. Desiring to become the next ruler of his alien species, the CEO tracked down Dropsy in a large circus and set the whole place on fire during the performance, not caring that a whole crowd of people was inside the circus. As the fire killed Dropsy's adopted mother, with Dropsy himself surviving, the CEO created another plot to kill him by luring him to perform in the reconstructed circus, only to steal his pets and mutate them into monsters, provoking them into rage, which led them to attack the whole city, leaving a trail of destruction. In his last spiteful act, the CEO shot Dropsy as the latter was attempting to comfort him.
  • Everyone Is Jesus in Purgatory: Ian Danskin made a video interpreting the game as a retelling of the Gospel.
  • Funny Moments:
    • If you go to the club, you can make Dropsy twerk.
    • The animation for hugging the bouncer outside the club is equally hilarious: we just see a close up of Dropsy and the bouncer fist-bumping each other.
  • Genius Bonus:
    • While the game's text looks indecipherable at first, someone on Steam was able to create an "alphabet" that makes it easier to read. For example, the text on Dropsy and the dog's "victory screens" read "HUGGED!" and "CLAIMED!," respectively.
    • Deciphering the text in the game will also shed light on the context behind certain plot points. For example, when you decipher the red clay village's bible (after recovering all the pages) and the notices on the wall of their temple, you'll learn that the villagers were once mine workers under S-Corp who were paid a very meager salary, and that the "vampire" in the village's lore is an analogy for S-Corp.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • The protagonist is a Non-Ironic Clown who loves to help people and give hugs, especially to his father. One scene near the end has Dropsy's dad marvel on how Dropsy's grown into a fine young man.
    • The church storyline sees Dropsy help turn the local branch of the church into a homeless shelter, in turn helping the pastor's daughter become fulfilled.
    • Reuniting the protestor with his father, the hermit, causes them to burst into tears and hug each other. The protestor then tearfully hugs Dropsy, thanking him profusely.
    • During the climax, every single person Dropsy has befriended will stall the police so he can catch up with the S-Corp CEO.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Turns out the S-Corporation CEO crossed it before the events of the game. He and Dropsy's other brother used to live with their own step-father. The CEO lured them both to the basement and murdered them, most likely so the CEO could ensure he was next in line for his real family's throne. This is also why he tried to have Dropsy killed.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Dropsy's nightmares are a mixture of straight horror imagery with more surreal elements, as an environmental form of Uncanny Valley.
    • The advertisements for the S-Corp circus depict Dropsy, surrounded by flames, holding a tank of gasoline with the Grim Reaper floating behind him.
    • A part near the end of the game could be a contender for "Most Cases of Mood Whiplash in One Cutscene." Dropsy enters the newly-built S-Corporation circus on opening night, only to be confronted with his now horribly mutated animal friends. For a second, it looks like they're going to pounce on the terrified clown...and then you breathe a sigh of relief when the animals show that they may look different, but they still love Dropsy. And then the S-Corporation CEO whips out a gun and shoots the dog, sending the crowd into a panic and the animals into a Roaring Rampage of Revenge.
    • What exactly the CEO was up to in the first place. As it turns out, Dropsy's not just an alien, but royalty. He also had a third brother, who grew up with the CEO and their Earth step-father. The CEO murdered his step-father and other brother on Christmas Day (and was planning to murder Dropsy), most likely to make sure he was next in line for the throne. Near the end of the game, Dropsy discovers the CEO's hidden base...and the severed heads of the step-dad and the other brother are mounted on the wall like trophies.
    • The S-Corporation CEO shooting Dropsy in the stomach. There's blood. And Dropsy did absolutely nothing to deserve it. Thankfully, he immediately gets better.
  • Tear Jerker: Imagine losing your mother in a fire. Now imagine if an entire town of people thinks you're the one who caused it. That's pretty much Dropsy at the beginning of the game.
    • Right near the entrance to Dropsy's circus tent, there's some graffiti of his face with a large X over it, and some unintelligible text. If you have cracked the code of the game's internal alphabet, you will find out that the text reads, "GO AWAY MURDERER".
    • Dropsy's mother wasn't the only one who died that night; the magic shop owner's wife, the town's pastor, and a young couple with a baby were killed, too. At the start of the game, you can tell the church is struggling without the pastor, and the magic shop owner's initial hostility towards Dropsy makes more sense.
    • During Dropsy's first nightmare, he sees a vision of his younger self being comforted by his mom. When he tries to interact with it, his mom vanishes, causing young Dropsy to start crying.
  • This Is Your Premise on Drugs: Pushing Up Roses said it was like playing Sam & Max Hit the Road while on LSD.
  • Ugly Cute: Dropsy. He's The Grotesque, but his goofy mannerisms and kind disposition contrast it nicely.
  • Unfortunate Character Design: Dropsy's character design has been noted as being somewhat similar to "Pogo the Clown" aka the infamous Serial Killer John Wayne Gacy's clown alter-ego. Word of God has acknowledged this, but has also insisted that the similarity is entirely unintentional.
  • The Woobie: Poor Dropsy... when he hangs his head in frustration, you just wanna give him a big hug.
