YMMV / Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F'

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Are Whis and Beerus as apathetic about Earth as they claim, only doing anything because of promises of food, or are they genuinely beginning to take an interest due to the potential they see in Goku and Vegeta? Despite Beerus's bad attitude and constant threats to destroy Earth at the slightest provocation, he always backs down or only blows up something innocuous. Besides, being as strong as they are, do they really need to keep Bulma around just to get food for them, when they could easily get it themselves?
    • Was Goku sparing Frieza out of his own general kindness, or just to have a better opponent down the line? Perhaps both?
  • Anti-Climax Boss
    • Shisami rushed into battle and was able to fight evenly with Piccolo, only to be one-shotted by Super Saiyan Gohan.
    • Despite coming back stronger than ever and actually overpowering Goku in his Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan form, Frieza is this since Goku only has to wait until his stamina tanks, after which he is easy pickings. To add another helping of humiliation, if Goku and Vegeta had worked together, they would have easily taken care of Frieza without any trouble.
  • Awesome Music: The ending song, "Pledge of Z" by Momoiro Clover Z, be it the original Japanese or the English (Funimation) version.
    • The middle part of the English (Funimation) version, which is just heavenly, no pun intended.
Soldiers rise up, here we go
    We gonna keep movin' on
    Forever is no more guarantee
Tomorrow can be broken no matter what we do
I gotta find the light of my heart
Keep it away from the dark
I wanna save my dream I believe
Maybe I can find my destiny
All I can do is try, gonna fly, cry no more
    Because we are TEAM "Z"
  • Badass Decay: Gohan once again slacks off on training and is vastly weaker as a result. He even loses his latest powerup from the end of the series, so he's gone back to using Super Saiyan which has been So Last Season for years. He beats Shisami, the red, horned Frieza's soldier who is an equal match for Piccolo. But he is the first to get his ass kicked by Frieza, and his pulse stops before Piccolo uses a kiai technique to restart his heart. Despite all that, he is the most powerful Z-Fighter in the battle against Frieza's army and Frieza himself muses that he could have taken down the entire army himself.
  • Broken Base:
    • Freeza being cast as the main villain. Many are quite fond of him and glad to see a return to form after his Villain Decay, others feel it's lazy that a new villain isn't being created for the movie, and others don't care either way.
    • Gohan's Badass Decay. Some feel its justified because he never wanted to be a fighter like his Dad and he has a newborn child to raise, while others are annoyed by his continued shafting just to remove him from the spotlight and focus on Goku and Vegeta.
    • Roshi being in the movie and the confirmation that he could have become stronger than Saiyan Saga Vegeta has lead to a split as well. Some like the fact that Roshi can become stronger since it meant he could be thrown in properly while others claim it's a huge Ass Pull that makes no sense.
    • Goku's characterization. Some fans don't like Goku's cocky personality in the movie, saying that it isn't like his character who is usually very humble and the cocky hotshot personality belongs to Vegeta. Other point out that Goku has gone through bouts of cockiness before whenever he gains a lot of power such as when he fought Mr. Popo and thought it would be easy since he beat King Piccolo, him fighting the Ginyu Force, when he first went Super Saiyan and toyed with Frieza, and his first fight with Beerus when he thought Super Saiyan 3 would be too much for the God of Destruction. There are also those who call Goku sparing Frieza again a regression of his character since he stops sparing his enemies after the Frieza Saga, with Kid Buu being a somewhat minor exception since Goku wished for him to be reborn into a good person before killing him. Others think this fits perfectly within his character since it shows Goku sparing Frieza for mostly selfish reasons; he wants Frieza to train his golden form so he doesn't have stamina issues and come back for a rematch.
    • Android 18, Goten, Trunks, Yamcha, Chiaotzu, and Buu being Put on the Bus. While some fans are happy that Tenshinhan and Roshi are finally getting a chance to shine, there are other fans who not only dislike the exclusion of the post-Namek Saga characters, they bemoan the reasons behind the absence of these six.note  A third camp agrees with the sentiments of the first camp about Tenshinhan and Roshi, but also believes the reasons for the exclusions Yamcha, Chiaotzu, and the post-Namek characters left much to be desired.
    • Frieza's defeat: Some people were fine with Goku killing him, since Vegeta finally got to lay a smackdown on him, while others wanted Vegeta to be the one to kill him. There's also the branch that were happy with the conflict presented, while others weren't happy that Frieza wasn't even a threat to begin with since all Goku and Vegeta had to do was wait out his poor stamina.
    • Goku being taken down by a common ray gun. This has shattered the fanbase between those who thinks it makes perfect sense since we have seen weaker characters hurt stronger characters in the series, usually it's Played for Laughs, and the plot twist was foreshadowed by Whis early in the movie, and those who call it an Ass Pull since no one with such a huge power difference has ever hurt a powerful character.
  • Catharsis Factor: Vegeta's No-Holds-Barred Beatdown of Frieza after he achieves Super Saiyan Blue is VERY satisfying to watch after remembering how he tortured him to death on Namek.
  • Character Rerailment: After years of being reduced to a Butt-Monkey and a walking case of The Worf Effect by Filler, Dragon Ball GT, and the Non-Serial Movies, this movie dials Frieza's character back to that of an opponent with power and cruelty to be feared. While he does suffer yet another Humiliation Conga, the fact the heroes don't take him as seriously as they should is what almost dooms the whole planet.
  • Complete Monster: Frieza is resurrected by his underlings Sorbet and Tagoma, to which Frieza single-mindedly craves revenge on the Super Saiyans who defeated him and would stop at nothing to achieve it. After Tagoma suggested that Frieza should ignore the Super Saiyans and focus on his empire, Frieza kills him by blasting him into space. Frieza begins his invasion of Earth, destroying an entire city to get the heroes' attention. After his army gets defeated by the Z fighters, he personally kills all of them for daring to lose, except for Sorbet. Finally getting his chance to fight Goku, once Frieza gets an advantage he tortures an injured Goku by stomping on his chest. When he is overpowered and about to be executed by Vegeta, Frieza decides to take the entire Earth with him by blowing it up.
  • Contested Sequel: The fanbase is divided as to whether this movie is better or worse than Battle of Gods. Some say the movie improves upon the concepts of the previous film and has much more enjoyable fight scenes, while others feel that the previous one was just a much more solid experience, or that the flaws that this film has just drag it down too much.
  • Critical Dissonance: Out of the Dragon Ball movies (not counting the reviled Dragonball Evolution), Resurrection F is the only one with enough reviews for a proper Rotten Tomatoes rating, at a fairly impressive (for an anime series movie) rating of 81%. However, fans are somewhat divided on the movie, particularly on whether it stacks up to Battle of Gods or not.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Despite his rather short time in the movie, Tagoma has a small following due to his unique design and Noble Demon traits.
  • Epileptic Trees: Fans speculate that the reason why Gohan "lost" his Ultimate Form and went Super Saiyan is because of marketing. Since neither Goku nor Vegeta turn to the blond Super Saiyan and Goten and Trunks are missing from the movie, there would be nobody to promote the popular blond SSJ form, thus Gohan became the victim of marketing.
  • Fan Nickname: Fans have taken to the terms Blueper Saiyan and Super Cyan for Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan.
  • Franchise Original Sin: People have treated Frieza gaining incredible power in the span of four months to be a massive stretch of the Willing Suspension of Disbelief, but arbitrarily fast powerups are nothing new to the franchise- accounting for his Super Saiyan transformation, Goku went from having a power level of 416 to having one of 150 Million in the span of a year and a half, while in the Buu Saga Gohan went from being weaker than his preteen self to being stronger than Super Buu in mere days.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: Taken to an insane degree with the release dates for the movie in Latin American countries. The movie was getting released in Mexico, Peru, Argentina and Chile before getting released in Japan. And on top of that, not a subtitled version, dubbed by the much-loved Latin American Spanish dub cast of the classic anime (for comparison, Battle of Gods wasn't released dubbed in Latin America until more than six months after its release in Japan). At least until FOX moved the scheduled date to June to avoid direct competition with other blockbusters Furious 7 and Avengers: Age of Ultron...
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight:
    • When you consider how one becomes a Super Saiyan God and the fact that Vegeta is able to become a Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan...
    • In this movie, Goku claims that Frieza would make an excellent sparring partner if he weren't corrupted to the core. Frieza replies that this sort of small-minded drivel is what makes Goku's existence so intolerable. By the time of the climax of the Universe Survival Saga, Frieza instead claims that Goku's naivité would make him want to vomit, but that by that point he's grateful for it.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • This isn't the first Dragon Ball movie that depicts a revived Frieza. Also, during that movie, Ultimate Gohan felled Frieza with a single punch. In this movie, Frieza pays him back the favour.
    • In the 2009 special "Yo! Son Goku and his Friends Return", Goku remarks "You know, looking back, Frieza wasn't that tough of an opponent..." Be Careful What You Wish For, Son.
    • "This isn't even my final form!" jokes are now relevant, now that Frieza has a new final form. Heck, the joke is relevant for Goku and Vegeta, as well!
    • Frieza's newest transformation is a Super Saiyan knock-off: a lot of yellow, with a golden aura. In other words, in his effort to destroy the Super Saiyans he despises, he transformed into a variation of the very thing he despises -- and destroyed him in battle, twice. Even he seems to lampshade it, as he implies that he has some control on the look of the transformation, and that he choose that look to make it easier to Goku and Vegeta to understand.
    • Sonic the Hedgehog's Super Form looking like a Super Saiyan gets a bit funnier since Goku and Vegeta's new form turns their hair blue.
    • Well Bulma, you finally got to see what Frieza looks like. However, while his sadistic quest for revenge makes that desire a lot Harsher in Hindsight, him acting like a dick to her personally is pretty darn hilarious.
    • Goku decided to stay dead after Cell killed him because he saw himself as a threat to the Earth since every major villain in Z up to that point was connected to him in some way. Now, we learn that Goku's presence kept the remains of Frieza's empire away from Earth because they were terrified of him.
    • At one point, Frieza insults Vegeta by calling him the "Prince of Nothing". By the time he's said this, Frieza's entire empire had fallen in his absence, the remains of his army had been obliterated, and his very last general, Sorbet, was destroyed. Technically speaking, now 'Lord' Frieza had nothing left to lord over.
    • A purple alien Bad Boss who has minions Thrown Out the Airlock and calls for an invasion of Earth. Sound familiar?
  • It Was His Sled: Pretty much everyone knew about the Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan form before the movie came out. Same goes for Golden Frieza.
  • Jerkass Woobie: All of Frieza's army can count. It's not difficult to pity them considering all they go through throughout the movie. They are all Punch Clock Villains forced to work for one of the universe's worst tyrants who can and will kill them for even the most minuscule slight or if he just feels like it. note  In fact, their decision to revive Frieza wasn't out of loyalty, but out of sheer desperation to save the crumbling empire, a fact that Frieza is fully aware of and even seems to relish. Later, when his army is defeated by the Z Fighters, Frieza kills them all out of sheer disgust. Not even loyal Sorbet is spared as he ends up killed by a stray energy blast from Frieza when it's deflected by Vegeta.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • "Frieza decided to train for the first time in his life" from Jump Festa 2015 has already gotten rather popular in certain parts of the fandom with how insanely powerful he got in this movie, especially with much Villain Decay he suffered once his time as the main villain was up in Z.
    • Comparisons to Saitama's Training from One-Punch Man have also been made.
  • Narm:
    • One of the songs that plays during the second trailer is the lighthearted and poppy chorus to "Pledge of 'Z'" by Momoiro Clover Z, over the images of the Z-Warriors being defeated. What makes it feel even more out of place is that the first half of the trailer has the much more intense 'F' by Maximum the Hormone playing, making for even more Mood Whiplash.
    • Frieza's new Golden Super Mode is regarded as looking silly by several, and a number of people have stated that they would have preferred if Frieza just got another transformation similar to Cooler rather than just ripping off the Super Saiyans.
    • On the topic of Frieza's Golden Super Mode, when he transforms for some reason the Chunky Updraft wipes out the cliff he's standing on except for the small chunk of rock he's standing on. Did Frieza keep that small chunk of rock intact and floating on purpose just so he'd have something to stand on so he'd look cool?
    • When Freeza triumphantly speculates that with proper training, he could potentially reach a power level of one point three million, complete with ominous music. This would be far less than his previous 120 millions maximum power, when the audience knows that the protagonists have already increased theirs exponentially. Could be intentional; in the original Saiyan and Frieza arcs of Z, Power Levels were consistently shown as an unreliable measurement at best. However, he could be talking about his base form who was at 530 000.
    • The fact that Frieza was never actually much of a threat throughout most of the movienote  is kind of narmy in and of itself. The only reason he ever stood a remote chance of winning was because Vegeta and Goku insisted on fighting him separately, and even that is mitigated by the presence of Beerus and Whis, who simply opt to stay out of the conflict provided Frieza doesn't disturb them, and by Frieza's own weakness of rushing through his stamina too quickly.
    • Bulma's anguished reaction to Vegeta's apparent consideration of joining teams would be dramatic... if one didn't consider the awful experience Vegeta had at Frieza's hands with it being obvious the Prince would never join the Tyrant. So really, it just comes off as Bulma having absolutely no faith in her husbandnote  despite it being obvious that she should.
  • Squick:
    • Frieza trying to pull his chopped up body together upon being revived is rather gruesome. In that same scene, we have Pilaf carrying Frieza's eye and giving it to Sorbet.
    • Frieza hacking up the liquid used in the healing tank on Sorbet and the troops. Doubles as a Funny Moment.
  • Pandering to the Base: An acknowledged example, with Akira Toriyama stating that while had fun in the previous movie, he felt it lacked fights and fanservice. Likewise, the inclusion of Frieza in a new movie.
Akira Toriyama: Looking back on it, Battle of Gods was a lot of fun for me, but there wasn’t much action, and maybe not enough fan service. So with Resurrection “F” I threw in a lot more action scenes!
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Whis notes Goku and Vegeta having difficulty working together. You would think that with the threat of Frieza the two of them would be forced to work together against him. Nope, instead they fight him one on one like they do other villains with the movie making it clear they could have defeated him easily if they fought him together and by the end of the movie they are still averse to working together.
  • Win Back the Crowd: Seems to be the goal with this movie. After Battle of Gods proved to be divisive among some parts of the fanbase for its lighthearted tone and comedic elements, which was a return to form from the original Dragon Ball, it seems this one is driving the action and seriousness to the front. Though it isn't completely devoid of the humor from the previous film and, if anything, the screenwriters managed to balance out both facets perfectly pleasing both those that came for a good fight and the continuation of what was established in Battle of Gods.
