YMMV / Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug

Go To

  • Awesome Music: The Funimation dub is notable for being the first of the Dragon Ball Z movies to feature licensed music from various rock and metal bands (A trend which would continue for a few other films such as Cooler's Revenge and the first Broly film.)
    • Many consider The standout track to be "Stupify" by Disturbed due to it being played during The False Super Saiyan scene.
  • Captain Obvious Reveal: Lord Slug being a Namekian is treated as a massive reveal. Of course, it's well and truly spoiled by now, but any viewer to be paying any kind of attention would probably realize that "tall, green-skinned, fanged, powerful alien with mollusc Theme Naming who knows about the Dragon Balls" doesn't really leave a lot of alternative candidates. And that's before you get into "leader of a demon clan who wants to wish for eternal youth" instantly invoking comparisons to the other villain who had that as their thing... who was a Namekian.
  • Funny Moments: The moment Krillin thinks he can beat Slug easy. Only to be rather abruptly taken out of the fight by Slug's Offhand Backhand, poor guy.
Krillin (Japanese): (as he's sent flying into the distance) Why does this always happen to me!?
Krillin (Funi dub): He's all yours, GOOOOKKKUUUU!
  • Inferred Holocaust: Lord Slug's attempt to terrafreeze the planet has turned even regular cities into ice-covered frozen wastelands. He would have undoubtably caused the deaths of thousands — if not millions — and severely affected numerous agricultural industries. The movie doesn't even attempt to imply that any of this happened, despite showing the possible results of a rogue planet hitting the Earth earlier.
  • It Was His Sled: Lord Slug is Namekian, which was a twist saved for near the end of the film, but freely revealed in tie-in media.
  • Signature Scene: Goku's transformation into the "False Super Saiyan". Primarily due to it being the first appearance of the Super Saiyan transformation in the entire franchise.
  • Squick: Piccolo tearing off his own ears to avoid Gohan's whistling.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • Lord Slug is essentially a retread of King Piccolo - and yet Piccolo does not get to face him as a representative of his past as a villain (or his ancestor, depending on how you look at it). He doesn't even grow to giant size like Slug does to duke it out with him, despite being shown to have that ability during the 23rd World Tournament. Just imagine how cool a Namekian Kaiju battle could have been.
    • Despite the film being created to showcase (a version of) the Super Saiyan transformation, the form itself has almost no impact on the proceedings. It appears for one scene, inflicts some damage on Slug that he promptly regenerates, and then vanishes for the rest of the movie, with its actual nature and capabilities being completely unexplored. It feels like it would be the easiest thing in the world to have it be the thing that finishes Slug off, as opposed to using the Spirit Bomb to kill the villain for the third film in a row.
  • Woolseyism: Goku's refusal of Slug's offer to join him is unique to the Funimation dub, yet it's amusing in its own right.
Goku: Thanks but no thanks! We're both self employed!
