YMMV / Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931)

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Despite Jekyll begging for forgiveness from his friends, fiancee, and God, when the police catch up with him he lies that Hyde escaped. Why is up to interpretation—was he fearful of facing consequences, addicted to the freedom as Hyde, or was it Hyde in Jekyll's form?
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The scene towards the beginning where the overwhelmingly Narmy little girl discovers that she can walk again seems to be setting up her recrippling from the book, but this never actually happens, so the scene just seems bizarre and out of place with zero bearing on the plot.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Ivy breaks down in tears as she begs Jekyll to protect her from Hyde, not knowing he is Hyde.
    • Jekyll's anguish as he prays to God for forgiveness and breaks off his engagement to Muriel without being able to tell her why.
Muriel: My love, what is it? What's wrong?
      Jekyll: Everything's wrong!
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: The first few transformation scenes (done largely without cuts) were staggering for the day (and are still impressive in the modern era), as we actually see Jekyll's face and hands change before our eyes. Since the film was shot in black and white, the director and makeup artist took advantage of this to apply different parts of the Hyde makeup with different colors of makeup, then block those colors from the lens with tinted filters, removing each filter as the transformation progressed.
