YMMV / Doraemon: Nobita's New Dinosaur

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Piisuke's rescue of Nobita and Kyu, without letting himself known. The general assumption is that Piisuke, being Older and Wiser, knew that should Nobita meet him again, their subsequent goodbye would be as heart-wrenching and sad as it was back in Doraemon: Nobita's Dinosaur, as such decide to spare his ex-master the heartbreak by keeping himself hidden; but the scene could also be interpreted as Piisuke having the reunion shattered by the fact that Nobita is now owner to a new dinosaur, Kyu, but decide to rescue Nobita just for old time's sake before moving on with life.
  • Awesome Moments: One of the most awesome moments in the entire franchise. With Nobita hanging for dear life onto the pycnofibres of a monstrous pterosaur, Kyu wastes no time trying to get airborne in order to save his master. After several failed attempts, he finally succeeds. By not gliding like the rest of his kind, but flapping his wings (complete with a couple close-up shots, a glimpse into the dinosaurs' future). And not only does he save Nobita just in time, but manages to out-fly the pterosaur, giving a knocked-out Doraemon enough time to recover and shrink the flying reptile to miniature size with the Small Light.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: While Piisuke's return and subsequent rescue of Nobita and Kyu is more than well-received, audiences are torn over the fact that Nobita never found out about it, with most of the fanbase thinking Piisuke should've played a bigger role in this adventure beyond two cameos.
  • The Woobie: Oh god, Kyu somehow managed to out-woobie Piisuke from the previous film. It's bad enough he's born sickly with a stunted tail which inhibits his flying ability, but his repeated brushes with danger from hostile dinosaurs trying to rip him apart (while he's unable to save his friends and sister), and how the Nobisaurus herd outright rejects (and even hurt!) him the moment he tries making friends, each and every single scene with Kyu around in one massive stab to the guts.
  • Woolseyism: In the original Japanese version, when Doraemon and his friends find themselves in a gigantic version of the Breeding Diorama Set gadget at the climax of the film, Nobita recognizes the place as "Nobi Dinosaur Land" (ノビサウルスランドだ) and Gian and Suneo mock him for writing his name wrong as "Nobi-inu" (のび犬), as that name was written on a pole. In the Cantonese dub, after Nobita recognizes the place as "大雄龍公園", Gian says that he only knows about Kowloon Park (九龍公園), while Suneo says that the joke wasn't funny.
