YMMV / DOOM: Repercussions of Evil

Go To

  • Ass Pull: "And Then John Was a Zombie"; somehow, the audience is left to assume that John had died and becomes a zombie, yet nothing explicit about his "death" was foreshadowed prior to that and it just up and happens at the story's climax.
  • Fridge Brilliance: The collapsing ceiling that traps John can actually happen in the original Doom games: some crushing ceilings do not retract upward, and if the player survives the crushing part, they will be immobilized inside the architecture.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: John's need to kill all the demons in the fic becomes this in Doom Eternal during the Flashback sequences in the "Sentinel Prime" level, where Doomguy, having fought demons for an unspecified time after Doom 64, reached the world of Argent D'Nur and is a complete mental wreck, shouting about how he needs to "Kill them...must kill them all!", indicating how traumatized Doomguy has become from endlessly fighting demons.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Doomguy was never given a name in the video games, but the story names him "John"- which, by complete coincidence, is the same exact name given to him by the movie adaptation, released three years later.
    • A soldier is trapped in a losing battle that’s taking a toll on his sanity, ends up finding out from what he thinks is the voice of his commanding officer over the radio that he indeed is the true monster. This is effectively the infamous Twist Ending of Spec Ops: The Line.
    • If you squint while looking at Doom (2016) lore, you could make the case that iD Software and Bethesda loosely adapted this story into that game's canon! "The Slayer's Testament" says the demons collapsed a whole temple on the Doom Slayer to keep him contained. They may well have used some demons as bait to lure him into the area, and deliberately made the ceiling fall on him. The And Then John Was a Zombie that followed was Hell's attempt to corrupt the Slayer, which ultimately failed. It could have also metaphorically happened when the beginning of 2016 has him awaken from his coffin, and "you are the demons" potentially referring to how he's become The Dreaded to even them, which The Slayer's Testament proves correct.
    • 2016 strongly implies that the trips to Hell and back have made the Doom Slayer at least partially demonic. While that isn't the case, Doom Eternal reveals Doomguy was placed in the Divinity Machine and became an Empowered Badass Normal, effectively turning him into the current Doom Slayer.
    • Although it's no longer added, Eternal was meant to feature an "Invasion Mode", where players are allowed to be demons in another player's campaign to stop their progress. Simultaneously, the multiplayer-based "Battlemode" has one player as the Doom Slayer while the opposing team of two players can control selectable demons. Furthermore, one skin for the Doom Slayer in Eternal allows players to be a zombie.
    • The fic's Wham Line "No, John: you are the demons" takes on a whole different meaning when the ending of The Ancient Gods - Part One, Downloadable Content for Doom Eternal, shows the Dark Lord, the supreme leader of all of Hell's armies, is the Alternate Universe Evil Counterpart of the Doom Slayer.
  • It Was His Sled: The last three lines of the story's Twist Ending is the most quoted part of the Fan Fic, and there's even a trope named after it.
  • Memetic Mutation: According to Know Your Meme, this story has now reached memetic status.
  • Narm: The whole thing, but "HE GOING TO KILL US" stands out.
  • Play-Along Meme: It's common courtesy to write a review of this Fan Fic as if it's a literary classic studied in English classes.
  • So Bad, It's Good: Years after the story was published, the author made it clear that it was his intent to make a purposefully-corny story full of grammatical errors. Given how this Fan Fic was Vindicated by History, he succeeded.
  • Vindicated by History: Similar to the comic book, Repercussions of Evil is best known for being nothing more than a subject of Memes, but there's a new-found appreciation for the Fan Fic when 2016 and Eternal took some of the story's dialogue and incorporated it into the overall DOOM lore, which ultimately tied the older titles with the modern installments.
