- Alternative Character Interpretation: Was Mario truly the villain the game makes him out to be? Or was he actually a Hero Antagonist who only locked up Donkey Kong to prevent any more rampages from him (and to kidnap Pauline again) and is only being painted as the bad guy due to the game being from Junior's point of view?
- Fanon: In the opening, Mario is helped by a second identical Mario to lift Donkey Kong's cage. Fans usually interpret this as an Early-Bird Cameo of Luigi despite him not being thought of until Mario Bros..
- Funny Moments: In the ending cutscene, Junior escapes with Donkey Kong and Mario chases him offscreen. He's kicked back onscreen by a giant gorilla foot and takes off running the other way.
- Suspiciously Similar Song: The main action screen theme bears more than a few tonal similarities to the 1960's classic "I Will Follow Him" by Peggy March.
