YMMV / Don: The Chase Begins Again

Go To

  • Complete Monster: Vardhaan Makhija is a ruthless crime lord who functions as the Arch-Enemy of Don. Seeking to gain a criminal empire from his rival, Vardhaan unleashes a wave of death and chaos to achieve it, even attacking a club to kill him. One infamous incident has Vardhaan blackmailing the innocent Jasjit into stealing for him by burying Jasjit's wife alive. Vardhaan ends up letting her die anyway, and later tries to kill Jasjit's young son Deepu. After his defeat in the original film, Vardhaan allies with the psychopathic Abdul Jabbar to lay a deadly siege to the Euro-printing DZB (Deutsche Zentral Bank) and tries to kill dozens of hostages there when his plans go haywire. In the ultimate act of spite against his rival, Vardhaan tries to force Don's Love Interest Roma into killing Don.
  • Evil Is Cool: Don is a total bastard, but damn if Shah Rukh Khan doesn't inject him with boatloads of charisma. The terrific songs he gets only add to this.
  • Fridge Brilliance: So many of the film's seemingly awkward moments (mainly related to Vijay's unlikely skills) make sense once it becomes obvious it was Don all along.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Jasjit and Deepu's reunion.
  • Magnificent Bastard: The man known as "Don" is the brilliant, jovial right-hand man of crime boss Singhania with a knack for improvising, using an empty gun pointed at a hostage to force the police to allow him to escape at one point. When agents plan to infiltrate his organization with a double, Don kills the double to pose as him, even carrying on his crime business after the death of his boss by swapping out a disc containing information on their crimes with a fake one he provides to his Love Interest while he keeps the real one. In the sequel, Don puts forth a complex plan to be arrested and then has all the prisoners drugged to cause food poisoning, allowing him and his nemesis/cohort Vardhaan to slip into paramedic uniforms as they are called in and escape. Revealing Vardhaan has one of two keys to a safety deposit box along with one Don possesses, allowing him to blackmail the national bank with its contents and force them to allow him to print money. Carefully negotiating for the police during a hostage situation when betrayed by Vardhaan and another of his allies, Don finishes the film a rich, free man, with those who double-crossed him dead or imprisoned.
  • Moment of Awesome: While a good portion of the film could be listed here, special mention has to go to Don's escape from the police after meeting Kamini where he manages to talk and threaten his way past a whole mess of armed police all while menacing his hostage with an empty gun.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Priyanka Chopra would later become better known in America as the lead in Quantico.
