• Alternative Joke Interpretation: At one point in "Bits" a girl is put off from eating a banana after attending the assembly. Was an actual banana used in a demonstration or did it just remind her of a certain appendage?
• Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: Joe's song in the Cold Open of "Boyfriend". The rest of the episode isn't a musical.
• Demographically Inappropriate Humour: Blatant references to genitals are made in "Girlfriend" and "Bits".
• Diagnosed by the Audience: Siobhan Murphy shows possible signs of being on the autistic spectrum, rarely displaying emotions outwardly and in "Cosmic Frisbo" failing to pick up on signs that Joe isn't into her.
• Jerkass Woobie: Joe is a jerk a lot of the time, but not all of his suffering comes from those actions.
• Rainbow Lens:
  • Laura Hubbert could be interpreted as a lesbian. She appears to be infatuated with Hot Molly, to the point that she hangs on her every word. Also, she consistently refers to her as Hot Molly throughout the series, whereas in the original short film she just called her Molly.
  • Siobhan Murphy could be interpreted as an aromantic asexual. While she did ask Joe out, she didn't show much interest in him, and all she did with him was hold hands. It's possible that she got a boyfriend purely out of social obligation or was just using Joe as a test subject to see if he would make her feel anything. Also, she has shown no interest in any other student before or since.
    Siobhan: So, it's not working out. We should break up.
• Vanilla Protagonist: Joe is more or less a normal kid, with his overactive imagination and habit of providing narration in his head standing out as his only quirks. But then again all the kids are pretty normal, with Siobhan standing out as the quirkiest.
