YMMV / Doctor Who S8 E4 "Colony in Space"

Go To

  • Harsher in Hindsight: Mary Ashe's "Jim'll fix it" remark sounds, these days, like an unfortunate nod to the long-running show hosted by Jimmy Savile, now known to be one of the most prolific child predators in modern history. In fact, it's entirely coincidental; Savile's show didn't start until four years later.
  • Ho Yay: The Master offers the Doctor the opportunity to rule the entire cosmos... for seemingly no reason whatsoever, as he doesn't need the Doctor's help. After the Doctor (predictably) refuses, the Master becomes unreasonably angry, implying that he genuinely wanted the Doctor to rule side by side with him.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The Master poses as an adjudicator here. Flash forward ten regenerations later, the Doctor does the same when dealing with the Judoon.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Helen Worth, who plays Mary Ashe in this story would go on to become Gail Platt in Coronation Street.
  • Special Effects Failure: The TARDISes inexplicably blink in and out of existence. Some fan theories existed that it's because the Time Lords are controlling the Doctor's TARDIS, but it does nothing to explain why the same thing happens to the Master's. In reality, the production team simply hadn't used the TARDIS in a while and director Michael E. Briant, while working on the editing, had forgotten how it was supposed to Fade In and out (and given the BBC's wiping policy at the time, there wasn't much in the way of reference footage).
