YMMV / Doctor Who S38E7 "Can You Hear Me?"

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: The Doctor's response to Graham sharing his fears of cancer is to say she is too socially awkward to properly respond and that she'll think of something to say later. Is she being genuinely obtuse, or does she recognise that Graham just wanted someone to listen and is now playing up her awkwardness to lighten the mood. Muddying the waters is Graham just laughing her response off, as if he got what he needed.
  • Anti-Climax Boss: The episode spends a lot of time building up the threat posed by Zellin and Rayaka, describing them as godlike figures, even comparing them to past characters like the Black and White Guardians, the Celestial Toymaker and the Eternals. However, they are taken down fairly quickly; with Tahira having tamed the Chagaska by literally facing her fears, she forces them both back into the prison, while the Doctor shows them their greatest fear.
  • Ending Fatigue: Zellin and Rayaka are defeated with nearly ten minutes of the episode still remaining. Negated a little in that a good chunk of the remaining time is dedicated to giving Yaz some much-needed Character Development, however.
  • Never Live It Down: For many, this episode will always be remembered as the one where Graham pours his heart out to the Doctor over his fears of his cancer coming out of remission and killing him, and the Doctor not knowing how to comfort him. The backlash was at least great enough for The BBC to issue a formal statement to explain the scene.
  • Squick: The fingers. Let's just say Whovians would think twice about touching their ears after this episode.
