YMMV / Doctor Who S31 E10 "Vincent and the Doctor"

Go To

  • Anvilicious: The Doctor gives a Kirk Summation at the end which tells you the moral the episode preceding it had already shown. He says that mental illness can't be cured with one good moment, but a great moment helps a person in the long run, no matter what they're fighting. That's why you should always be kind to people and give them more of those moments, to go against the bad.
  • Broken Base: The Krafayis. A pointless monster thrown in simply for there to be a monster, or some more interesting subtext on Vincent's depression? Or a means to get the Doctor more interested?
  • Dated History: Just over a year after the episode premiered, a biography of Vincent titled Van Gogh: The Life would be published, putting forth the theory and presenting a fair amount of circumstantial evidence that Van Gogh may have died from an accidental gunshot inflicted by a friend's kid brother who was a wanna be teenage cowboy who loved to play with guns. Van Gogh, the theory states, lied about it being suicide to protect the neighborhood kids. The truth about Van Gogh's demise has been a hot topic of debate ever since.
  • Discredited Meme: Somewhat. There came a point where so many people mentioned the "if I had an actual time machine I'd show van Gogh his legacy like the Doctor" scenario that people sick of hearing it would counter that Vincent would have gotten annoyed that he's been repeatedly dragged by Whovians to various art exhibits featuring his work.
  • Fridge Brilliance: According to scholars, Van Gogh was notably attracted to older women in mourning. He falls for Amy Pond, who, unbeknownst even to herself, is in mourning.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: "The Pandorica Opens" heavily implies that van Gogh's visions of the TARDIS exploding helped further inspire his eventual suicide due to the two people he cared the most about (The Doctor and Amy) seemingly dying.
    • A few years after this episode premiered, evidence came to light that Van Gogh may not have actually killed himself, but was shot by a pair of boys who were out hunting, and claimed he shot himself to protect their futures. If this applies in-universe as well, The Doctor and Amy's museum trip just became an outright "Shaggy Dog" Storyor it might have improved his life immeasurably before a tragic end. Who knows?
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Considering how Tony Curran and Bill Nighy's characters were explicit rivals in the Underworld franchise, there's a certain amusement in seeing Nighy's art historian praise Van Gogh's paintings as the painter in question listens.
  • Signature Scene: Either the night sky transitioning into a "The Starry Night" or Vincent van Gogh's visit to the Musée d'Orsay in 2010.
  • Tear Jerker: Seeing Vincent van Gogh getting to hear the praise and accolades from the art world that he never got to see during his lifetime, and watching him break down into Tears of Joy, only to find out in the end even that wasn't enough to cure his depression? Don't pretend you didn't get at least a bit choked up.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: The transition of the night sky into van Gogh's Starry Night painting.
