YMMV / Doctor Who S28 E5 "Rise of the Cybermen"

Go To

  • Complete Monster: John Lumic, also in the next episode, is the creator of the Cybus Cybermen. Lumic is a cold-blooded, amoral snake of a man who was suffering from a terminal illness. To discover a path to immortality, Lumic had homeless people abducted and experimented upon to convert them into Cybermen, leaving their human brains trapped in robot bodies, forced to act to their programming. When the British government refused to bankroll Lumic's project, he decided to overthrow it by dispatching a horde of Cybermen to liquidate any potential dissidents to his rule, intending to eventually spread them across the globe.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The episode features rounded devices inserted in the ears, called "EarPods." Only five years later, Apple began making EarPods. Their wireless equivalent, AirPods, released in 2016 alongside the iPhone 7, kinda look like the wireless EarPods of Cybus Industries. Also, the "handlebar"-like devices on Cybermen's heads look suspiciously like those huge clunky headphones (like Beats by Dr. Dre) that have become popular in recent years.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Mickey or Rickey being London's Most Wanted is this when Noel Clarke was later accused of sexual assault.
  • Ho Yay: Mickey continues to be annoyed at the Doctor and Rose's relationship, but this time instead of being miffed that Rose is ignoring him for the Doctor, he's upset the Doctor is choosing Rose over him.
  • Memetic Mutation: "How will you add to this page FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE?"
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Lumic makes a plea to the President of Great Britain, saying that allowing him to create Cybermen will allow him to save his own life - and, presumably, anyone else with the same illness. The President denies him on the basis that it is "obscene"… even though by this point, the President doesn't know about the suppression of emotions, forced conversions, or Lumic's greater plans, so he's literally dooming a man to death because he thinks cybernetics in general are "obscene". (Of course, by that point Lumic is quite obviously utterly nuts, which may have tainted his vision of things.)
