YMMV / Doctor Who S23 E1 "The Mysterious Planet"

Go To

  • Harsher in Hindsight: Peri believes that the Earth has been destroyed, and the Sixth Doctor tries to comfort her by saying that he understands what she feels, and that death and the end of all things are inevitable. Three incarnations later, the (War) Doctor will fully understand how Peri felt, when Gallifrey is (supposedly) destroyed at the end of Time War.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The idea of black light being a potent source of power is pretty funny to anyone who had a glow-in-the-dark poster on their college dorm room.
  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks!: A common criticism levied twicefold at this story: the main plot is a repeat of "The Krotons" (which itself was never highly regarded), while the framing device of the Doctor being on trial for violating Gallifrey's Alien Non-Interference Clause was already used in "The War Games" to much more acclaimed results. Consequently, the story is seen as not doing much to aid Season 23's efforts at easing back on the heavy reliance on continuity that marked Season 22.
  • Memetic Mutation: The opening shot has gotten numerous comparisons to the closing credits of Red Dwarf, to the point at one least one video exists that syncs the shot to the closing theme.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: The opening shot. This was the first use of computer effects in the series and it still holds up, looking more like a shot from an episode of Deep Space Nine than something from Doctor Who at one of its lowest points budget-wise.
