- Franchise Original Sin: The Master's disguising himself as the Portreeve heralded the beginning of a trend for the Master to adopt some kind of disguise for the first half of a story, after which the plot twist of his being the Big Bad would be revealed to the audience. Here, the twist worked well for various reasons — including Anthony Ainley doing a good job of making the Portreeve seem like a distinct character, the strong make-up and costuming, and Shardovan being used as a Red Herring — but future stories would try to recreate this twist without these elements (most notably with Kalid and Sir Gilles Estram) leading to the disguise serving no obvious purpose in-universe, and the actual revelation coming across as either an Ass Pull or a Captain Obvious Reveal.
