YMMV / Doctor Who S15 E2 "The Invisible Enemy"

  • Narm:
    • The manifestation of The Virus is not just unimpressive-looking, it's hilarious-looking. A big iridescent shrimp, shaped basically like a chess knight but with four limbs sticking horizontally out of its front that kick like a baby's, and whiskers that tremble emotionally as it brags about its impending domination of the universe. You just want to give it a hug. Hell, even the Doctor can't take it seriously.
Doctor: What? That pathetic crustacean, your leader?
    • The serial also features Seeker White Blood Cells that are just large, fuzzy, obviously hollow white balls that attack the microscopic Leela by bouncing off her, to which she naturally reacts like she's in mortal peril.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Hedges is played by Kenneth Waller, who would later be best known for playing Old Mr. Grace in Are You Being Served? and Grandad in Bread.
  • So Bad, It's Good: It has many special fx failures, an insane plot and a hilariously unthreatening villain, but it is entertaining and the script is decent; plus it introduced K-9, one of the most iconic companions.
  • Special Effects Failure: A wealth of examples, in a jarring (budget-induced) comedown from the competent and atmospheric production of the previous three seasons:
    • The nucleus. Even Tom Baker couldn't take it seriously, at one point he started singing "Prawn Free". Eventually, he blurted out,
"How am I supposed to act to a fucking prawn?"
    • The section of wall that K-9 brings down in order to create a barricade is clearly pre-cracked. Apparently, this was the result of it being hastily reshot after the K-9 prop malfunctioned during the initial take, and the effects team didn't have the time to make the section blend in properly. This and many other special effects issues were later cleaned up for the DVD, however.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: Despite the copious amounts of Special Effect Failure elsewhere in the story, it can boast some of the best modelwork in the show's entire run.
