YMMV / Doctor Who S14 E2 "The Hand of Fear"

Go To

  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: Sarah Jane's departure is made slightly less sad by the sheer ridiculousness of her outfit, coupled with the items she happens to be carrying. As this blogger. described it, "Sarah then exits TARDIS left, clutching a variety of things that seem to be the physical embodiments of non-sequiturs - an owl doll and a tennis racket being the most obvious - as she walks away whistling."
    • Made funnier when "School Reunion", reveals that instead of dropping Sarah Jane off near her home in a London suburb (where having oddball clothing and gear wouldn't be so bad) the Doctor leaves her in the wrong city. This is actually mentioned in "Hand of Fear" but it's not until later that we learn she was dropped off pretty much at the opposite end of the UK!
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: Watching Sarah Jane's departure with the knowledge that she returns several times just makes it sweeter.
    Until we meet again, Sarah.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The serial ends with Sarah Jane interacting with a dog and whistling "Daddy Won't Buy Me a Bow Wow". She would later get not one but two spin-offs featuring K9.
  • Narm Charm: Male Eldrad is so over-the-top hammy Tom Baker famously can't keep a straight face. And it works! Eldrad comes across as completely unhinged, and thus actually kind of scary.
  • Signature Scene: Sarah-Jane's goodbye to the Doctor is not only the most famous scene in this serial, but one of the most famous in all of Classic Who.
  • Tear Dryer: Sarah-Jane's departure goes from sad to funny when she discovers that she's not in Croydon after all and complains about the Doctor's piloting skills to a random dog.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: As noted on the main recap page, Sarah Jane's costume dates the episode to a very specific period in 1976 when that style of dungarees became popular.
  • WTH, Costuming Department?: Sarah Jane's infamous "Andy Pandy" outfit. But again, given the time in which the serial was filmed, lots of women across the UK were wearing the same article of clothing to protect against a Biblical-scale swarm of biting insects.
