• Network Decay: Shark Week was increasingly criticized in the early 2010s for doing the exact opposite of what the programming was supposed to. Instead of celebrating enigmatic marine life, it became more and more about sensationalism, fear mongering, and outright psuedo-science with many experts brought in for programming lied to about the nature of the documentaries they were to be featured in. It reached it's apex with Megalon: the Monster Shark Lives being a full on mockumentary that fooled thousands of viewers. That said...
• Win Back the Crowd: Discovery President Rich Ross heard the criticism and vowed to correct it. The later 2010s saw Shark Week return some of its old luster. More experts, more honest documentaries with facts beyond spreading fear about sharks and instead showing their kinder side, and even a special specifically functioning as a Take That! to the megalodon special.
