  • Ensemble Dark Horse: "When You Were Mine" wasn't released as a single but is easily the most popular song on the album.
  • Growing the Beard: Critics have pointed to this album as the point where Prince started doing this.
  • Once Original, Now Common: This album's musical combination of Synth-Pop and New Wave Music with funk, known as "The Minneapolis Sound," was a revelation at the time and inspired virtually all R&B acts that would follow in the decade. Similarly, the lyrical content was very explicit for its time, attracting significant controversy. Nowadays, it might seem as if the music is just "generic 80s pop rock," and the lyrical content doesn't even seem particularly racy compared to what would come later, the still-shocking "Sister" (an ode to Brother–Sister Incest) excluded.
  • Squick: "Sister." Even as the shortest song on the album, it's still not something you want to know about if you can avoid it.
