YMMV / Dinosaur! (1985)

  • Catharsis Factor: After the Struthiomimus stole nearly every egg from a Hadrosaurus nest, it will feel satisfying when it gets killed by a pair of Deinonychus shortly afterwards.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: As satisfying as it may have been the see the Hadrosaurus knock over the Tyrannosaurus rex, it's also a rather dark omen of what would later happen to host Christopher Reeve, who only a decade later would be rendered a quadriplegic in an equestrian accident.
  • Heartwarming Moments: At the end, Reeve acknowledges that while he is saddened by the fact that the dinosaurs are all dead, they nevertheless inspire him and others, because they live on in our imaginations.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: The above monologue could easily apply to Christopher Reeve himself, as while he may be dead, he continues to inspire us with his most famous role and his activism.
  • Moment of Awesome:
    • The scene where the Struthiomimus is cornered and killed by a pair of Deinonychus immediately after stealing several eggs from a Hadrosaurus nest.
    • The father Hadrosaurus effortlessly smashing down a Tyrannosaurus rex with a single swipe from its tail, defying the common stereotype of hadrosaurs as defenseless prey animals.
    • A small mammal (actually an opossum) emerges from the skeletal remains of a dead dinosaur, signalling the beginning of a new era of life on Earth, to triumphant synth music.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The scene of the Struthiomimus being hunted down and killed by the Deinonychus is rather unsettling, in large part because the former is still breathing while the two predators chow down on their prey's flesh.
  • Tear Jerker: The K-T extinction event bringing about an end to the dinosaurs' rule and the end of the Mesozoic era. A particularly heartrending shot sees a starving Hadrosaurus bellowing in anguish over its ruined nest.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: As with its predecessor, the animated sequences in the documentary are superbly done.
