YMMV / Dian Shi Ma Li

Go To

  • Fan Nickname:
    • The game has been nicknamed Mario Lottery.
    • Since the Mario-like sprite has no given name, many people refer to this character as "Fortran", after the F on his cap.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • The game was a meme in both Chinese and English-speaking western internet, but the two memes are surprisingly distinct. The Chinese-speaking internet picked up on the game in 2007 and parodied the hell out of it because of its hilarious Mario sprite and weird Traditional Chinese characters, before the meme died off. The English-speaking internet learned about the game a few years later and used Mario's sprite as YouTube Poop material, with "Fortran" as his name and "PUSH START TO RICH" as a sub-meme, and this meme died off too.
    • In 2014, Vinesauce streamer Joel played 7 Grand Dad — a bootleg of The Flintstones: The Rescue of Dino & Hoppy that featured a recolored version of the "Mario" sprite from Dian Shi Ma Li on its title screen — in a stream covering NES bootleg games. His reaction to the title screen became a meme almost instantly (with users referring to the sprite as "Grand Dad"), and reached further popularity when the character and Joel's reaction became a running gag on SiIvaGunner. Joel would encounter Dian Shi Ma Li in a later stream, during which he referred to Fortran as being Grand Dad's "distant cousin".
