The movie

  • Complete Monster: "The Great Vorelli" is a sadistic stage hypnotist who proves to be far more evil than the titular dummy. Using his assistant Hugo as a test subject for his dark powers, Vorelli kills him on stage, leaving him to a slow death, then transfers Hugo's soul into a dummy and enslaves him to his will for years. As part of his act, Vorelli psychologically torments volunteers just to relish their fear response, while he ridicules Hugo in front of the audience and locks him in a cage each night. Vorelli also plots to marry rich heiress Marianne, who he hypnotizes and rapes, leaving her in a coma. When his assistant Magda discovers this, Vorelli incites Hugo to murder her and replaces her with another woman who he places under mind control. Gloating that he plans to kill Marianne and transfer her soul to a new dummy, Vorelli attempts to destroy Hugo for his disobedience.
  • Designated Hero: Mark English, whose major achievement is getting Marianne into danger to satisfy his obsessive curiosity.
  • Hollywood Homely: Magda is implied to be past her prime and out of shape, even though she's mildly plump at most and is every bit as attractive as her replacement Grace, if not moreso.
  • Funny Moments: When Vorelli declares that he loves ham and Hugo immediately calls him a cannibal.
  • So Bad, It's Good: Silly as this movie can get, there are a number of good ideas waiting to be seen (including a very nice subversion of Demonic Dummy).
  • The Woobie: Hugo, and to an extent Magda the Lovely Assistant.

The band

  • Awesome Music: In abundance. The Girl Who Was... Death and Dies Irae are arguably the best examples, though honestly, you really can't go wrong with any of it. Although Mr. Doctor is hardly subtle about his influences, he's created some of the most unique music ever recorded in any genre.
  • Creator Worship: Mr. Doctor, of course - many fans seem to regard him as nothing less than a genius, and perhaps more than that. To be fair, he does have two actual doctorates (in criminology and philosophy).
  • Fan Nickname: Mr. Doctor is also known as "The Man." Presumably not that Man. Or That Man.
  • Narm: Mr. Doctor's vocals can come across as this. Saying he's a Large Ham wouldn't do justice to just how theatrical the guy gets. He literally sounds like Gollum sometimes.
  • Narm Charm: Of course, that's exactly why many fans love them.
  • Periphery Demographic: A lot of metalheads are into them due to numerous metal artists citing them as an influence, including Opeth's Mikael Akerfeldt, Ved Buens Ende and Dødheimsgard's Vicotnik, Dødheimsgard's Aldrahn, A Forest of Stars' Mister Curse, Ashenspire's Alasdair Dunn, and more. When you hear Mr. Doctor's manic vocals, you'll probably understand immediately why they're so influential on so many metal acts.
