YMMV / Deltarune Salt Route

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Given the fact that this AU has no official “canon”, it’s quite common for people to come up with their own versions of the route.
    • How willing, or unwilling, is Spamton to kill those you encounter? He has no qualms about killing Kris to steal their SOUL in the original game, but that could be explained by it being aligned with his own goals, whereas he has to go along with your actions here.
    • Speaking of goals, how much is Spamton willing to go along with your own? It could be said that he has his own agenda that he’s shifting to the side in favor of looking for his keys, but killing others to become stronger aligns with his plans well enough that he doesn’t object to it.
    • What are the keys? According to the original post, they are never actually found in-game. Are they related to the KeyGen, or are they something else entirely? Were the keys actually the “salt stains” you pick up at the beginning of the game, and are you just hiding them from Spamton so that he has to go along with what you do?
    • Is it possible to abort the Salt Route and be able to spare enemies again? The original post says you’re locked in as soon as you choose to help Spamton find his keys, but some fans have come up with ways to go back to a Normal route, usually by finding spare keys.
  • Complete Monster: In JQR's adaptation, The SOUL pretends to help Spamton find his keys, only to manipulate him into killing anyone on their way, including an Addison who wanted to make up with Spamton. When Kris manages to briefly free themself from the SOUL's control, it forcefully takes back control of them and brutally beats up Spamton when he tries to back out from the deal. After having killed Queen, the SOUL says "no" upon Spamton asking if he made it proud, with the Darkner sadly leaving, likely forever traumatized.
  • Draco in Leather Pants: Spamton is already a victim of this, but various Salt Route-fanfics go one step further. Spamton is often portrayed as being completely unwilling to murder people, and being as much of a woobie as Noelle. In canon, however, Spamton will gladly assist you in your slaughter across the Cyber City, and eventual murder of Berdly, to take over Queen's mansion and become a god.
  • Memetic Mutation: Spamton fans when they taste salt in their foodExplanation
  • Signature Scene: Kris and Spamton lying together on the carpet as the latter asks "I made you proud, didn't I?". The scene where you make him kill a former friend of his is a really close second though.
  • Tear Jerker: Kris forcing Spamton to kill the Addison that was willing to be friends with him again, while they're in an embrace no less.
