YMMV / Deck the Halls

Go To

  • Bile Fascination: It has become a classic example of a "bad Christmas movie" among many moviegoers, which has naturally gotten a fair share of people watching to see why it's become so reviled.
  • Designated Hero: While the movie focuses more on Buddy and clearly wants us to side with him, his action once things start hitting the fan can make this impossible to some viewers. Steve isn't any better, sure he's in the right that Buddy is being disruptive with his antics, but rather than do anything sensible, he decides to try and outdo Buddy at his own game and comes off as equally childish.
  • Esoteric Happy Ending: Buddy finally accomplishes his goal of making his home visible from space with the help of Steve and their neighbors; however, the two have racked up quite the criminal record for themselves and have spent the last of what they have to make up for nearly ruining Christmas for their families. And considering the sheer amount of energy Buddy must be spending on his massive display, odds are they will be penniless once the excitement wears off and the bills start coming in.
  • Special Effect Failure: When Buddy's house becomes visible from space, the bright light somehow emanating from the computer screen stops right at the edge of the desktop, implying it's just a video on the computer.
  • Squick:
    • A camel coughing up bright yellow spittle all over Steve.
      • Steve landing on camel poop.
    • Buddy's passive remark on having dropped a fridge onto a cat, explaining that most of it got away.
    • Steve and Buddy unwittingly cat-calling their own respective daughters.
    • Buddy having to warm up a near-hypothermic Steve in a sleeping bag with his body heat...meaning both were nude. Steve's subsequent scream is perfectly justified.
    • To a lesser extent, Matthew Broderick in a bright orange jumpsuit.
      • And to an even lesser extent, the crossdressing Sheriff.
  • Unintentional Period Piece:
    • A slight example, when Kelly says "That's what Christmas memories are made from, they're not planned, they're not scheduled, nobody puts them in their Blackberry, they just happen".
    • An even more blatant example- during Buddy's light show when his light show is sync'd to a DJ mixer's performance, the mixer is clearly playing music from 2 iPod classics.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic:
    • Steve, whose increasingly brazen attempts to exact revenge on Buddy make him no better than the new neighbor who has caused him so much angst with his light show. This exchange happens after the ice-skating competition:
Steve: (To Buddy) Fine! But the last time I looked at the satellite pictures, still couldn't see your house. Not a flicker! Not a blip! How's that feel, huh? How's it feel to be invisible?! Huh? Huh?! (Cut to Buddy walking away forlorn)
    • Also Buddy, who spends huge amounts of money on decorations even though his family is in "monumental debt" according to his wife, all for an unreasonable and selfish desire (wanting his house to be seen from outer space).
