YMMV / Debra!

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: In "Teen Capsule" when Preston, Aussie and Brud are deciding what to put in the time capsule Brud decides on his block of wood:
Preston: Exactly how does wood say teenagers?
    • Also, this from "Cannon Have Your Cake":
Preston: (in horror having just been told he is going to be shot out of a cannon) Brud's building the cannon!!!
Debra: He knows a lot about wood.
  • Adorkable: Debra is this to a tee.
  • Diagnosed by the Audience: Debra's quirky mannerisms and social missteps are often commented on by other characters. While she is supposed to be regarded as just quirky many of her traits when observed resemble a neurodivergent condition, particularly something on the autism spectrum.

  • Harsher in Hindsight: Dancy's taunt to Debra before her and Preston go on at the school talent show, "now all that's left is for your little act to flop", comes across as very foreboding in hindsight regarding the series' own status as an Acclaimed Flop that sadly ended after 13 episodes.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • While the series was short-lived Niamh Wilson successfully tied for Best Lead Actress in a Television Series at the Young Artists Awards. The actress and show that Wilson and Debra tied with... Cristine Prosperi in Degrassi: The Next Generation.
      • Also, the theme song is performed by jACK...
      • Alicia Dea Josipovic was still appearing in Degrassi when Debra was in production and airing. Niamh Wilson would join three years later.
    • Taking into account all of Debra's odd mannerisms and quirks than are very similar to people on the autism spectrum it is worth mentioning that the girl who plays young Debra in the flashback to the 3rd grade spelling bee resembles arguably the world's most famous girl with Asperger's.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Niamh Wilson for Imojack fans.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • In "Let's Party", Debra's nemesis and the show's antagonist Dancy doesn't appear. Considering that this episode introduces Debra's equally-wacky and adorable cousin Marla Dancy's reaction or the interaction between them would be worth anticipating.
    • Debra and Gracie are shown to get on very well, with the childlike, imaginative and girly Debra making a good impression on Gracie. Sadly there are no episodes that pair the two together.
  • Too Good to Last: Only 13 episodes.
  • Values Dissonance: Dancy has a blog, and later twitter account making fun of Debra, which doesn't become an issue for the school. While social networks were starting to be increasingly mainstream around 2011 it would be unlikely to see this as a plot point over the next few years due to more schools implementing rules against cyberbullying.
