YMMV / Deadly Prey

  • Awesome Music: As ridiculous as this film is, "Never Say Die" by Steve McClintocknote  is a genuinely great song about not giving up in the face of adversity.
  • Cliché Storm: Oh so many in this movie. What common action movie trope from the eighties and ninties hasn't been used in this movie?
  • Complete Monster: Colonel Tom Hogan was a cruel military officer who believed in killing troops for failing missions. After being discharged, he decided to create his own army so he could hire himself and his army out to terrorists. Hogan trains his army by having them kidnap people and hunt them. After his army kidnaps ex-special force soldier Mike Danton, Hogan becomes obsessed with making him join. When Danton refuses, Hogan kidnaps Danton's wife Jamie and rapes her. Hogan proceeds to kill Jamie's father, and has his lieutenant Thornton kill her as well. In the sequel, Deadliest Prey, Hogan kidnaps Danton once again, and sends numerous men after him, fully expecting Danton to kill them. Hogan kidnaps Danton's new wife Allison, planning to kill her, and has his own men killed for incredibly petty things, such as panicking when Danton is killing most of the army, and coming back alive when Hogan expected them to die. He later murders three people who helped Danton, before trying to kill Danton and his wife.
  • Narm
    • Jaimy's actor's Valley Girl portrayal, which is used in inappropriate situations like after her rape.
    • Hogan saying Danton's name a lot, which makes it come off as Ho Yay.
  • Special Effect Failure: To the point of defying logic itself. At one point, Danton fires his rocket launcher at Hogan and his men, and misses only due to the rocket seeming to magically phase through all of them, explode 10 feet behind them, and the resulting shockwave (yes, shockwave, not shrapnel) apparently killing only a few mercenaries.
  • So Bad, It's Good: Even by mindless 80's action-flick standards, this movie is brain-hurtingly stupid, but it's so convinced of its own radness that you can't help but love it at least a little. Besides, name one good movie with the audacity to have the hero cut off a bad guy's arm and beat him to death with it.
  • Too Cool to Live: Jaimy's Dad (credited as such and played by Cameron Mitchell). His response to the guys who kidnapped his daughter is shoot everyone in the way of reaching her, while still taking the time beforehand to fuck with them about it. Shame Hogan quickly executes him a few minutes later.
