YMMV / DC Year of the Villain

Go To

  • Arc Fatigue:
    • City of Bane has been long and dragging so long, the majority of fans are just bored and wish to get over with it already. You can imagine the relief of the fandom when it was finally over.
    • The Infected storyline started getting these reactions once it spilled out from Batman/Superman on other books and one-shots, going from a six-issue arc to a six-issue arc leading to multiple one-shots, arcs in two separate books and a six-issue miniseries.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Batman Who Laughs - while he has a considerable following, a number of fans find him shallow, overrated and edgy for the sake of it. While previously the latter group was a Vocal Minority, it grew significantly when he started turning fan-favorite characters evil.
  • Broken Base: Joker's one-shot caused two reactions - those who think it is pandering to misogynistic online communities and those who think it's mocking these very people. Both groups are then split between those who approve and disapprove of the interpreted message.
  • Continuity Lockout: Despite the event being more or less built to be easy to get into, it's actually easy to get lost without having been already up to speed with Batman (Tom King), Justice League (2018), Justice League: No Justice, Dark Nights: Metal, Batman Who Laughs and Superman (Brian Michael Bendis).
  • Only the Author Can Save Them Now:
    • A common complaint in Scott Snyder-lead stories, where things seem to get worse and worse for the good guys until they miraculously pull through at the last feasible second. Except with this being his biggest story yet and affecting the entire DCU, the effect is far more blatant.
    • After Flashpoint Thomas Wayne not only single-handly beat up Cassandra Cain and Kate Kane, two characters Tom King claims could beat Batman in combat, but also beat them and several other members of Batfamily all at once, it became clear to the majority of the fans that the only way Bruce can defeat him will be this.
  • Rooting for the Empire: With so much Evil Versus Evil going on it was inevitable, but it was especially visible with a lot of people sick of Batman Who Laughs, who found themselves cheering for Lex Luthor in their confrontation, despite Lex not being really much better.
  • The Scrappy: While Batman Who Laughs is divisive, Flashpoint Thomas Wayne is widely despised by fandom after helping Bane break Bruce mentally and take over Gotham and then beating Orphan, Batwoman, Batgirl, Robin, Red Robin, Signal and Huntress all at once and in very violent manner. The fact he would do it all made him look like an amoral bastard, and the fact he could made him look like a Creator's Pet.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: With so many villains gaining more and more upper hand over the good guys all at once, heroes themselves becoming corrupted and things constantly getting worse and bleaker, a lot of people just became sick of it.
