• Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: Steiner's hallucinations come out of left field and create the impression that his mind has been shattered. But after he abruptly returns to active duty he's pretty much exactly the man he was before, and that plot thread isn't mentioned again.
  • His affair with the nurse (which was apparently real?) also occurs for no reason, and never comes up again. Also qualifies as a Romantic Plot Tumor.
• First Installment Wins: In 1979 there was a loose sequel (funded by West German studios, but directed by Anglo-American director Andrew V. McLaglen) entitled Breakthrough featuring Richard Burton as Steiner, involved in a plot against Hitler in the closing days of the war. If you've never heard of it, it's understandable: the film received a limited theatrical release and was universally panned by critics.
