• Enjoy the Story, Skip the Game: The game was praised for its well-done plot, as expected from Yasumi Matsuno. The gameplay is considered to be nothing special and largely ignored due to some rather Guide Dang It! moments.
• Scrappy Mechanic: Making necessary Plot Coupons into insanely rare item drops that can only be triggered by beating enemies in a specific order is generally seen as a poor design decision, resulting in players wandering aimlessly due to no indication of where to go or what to do to progress in the game. And once they surrender and look up the answer, it devolves into repeating the same battles until the items drop.
• That One Boss: The Witch Kings trio impersonating your party, on both a regular cycle and especially New Game Plus.
