  • Covered Up: Fans of the Dumb and Dumber soundtrack were surprised to find out that "The Ballad Of Peter Pumpkinhead" was originally an XTC song.
  • Critical Dissonance: Critics were never fond of the band, particularly their downer lyrics, but they've maintained a steady cult following in spite of this.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: "Superman's Song" is a mournful dirge that tells the story of Superman who had the power to commit great evil and bring himself unfathomable riches, but instead chose to use his powers for good, while expecting no payment for his deeds (the song also compares him to Tarzan of the Apes, who is considered to be a crude, rogue, and uncivilized Anti-Hero). The song focuses on the death of the superhero, and its chorus says it all: "Superman never made any money / For saving the world from Solomon Grundy / And sometimes I despair the world will never see / Another man like him". As if that wasn't chilling enough, there is even a music video that shows his funeral! And this was over a year before The Death of Superman Story Arc!
  • Narm Charm: Like most of the band's songs, "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" has patently ridiculous yet straight-faced lyrics and Brad Roberts' signature froggy vocals, but the instrumentation and harmonies are honestly rather beautiful.
  • Spiritual Adaptation: "Superman's Song" has been called one of the best Superman adaptations ever.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Plenty, but "At My Funeral" especially.
    • "Superman's Song". Worse when you know he's already died in-canon.
