• Bilingual Bonus: Early in the story, when Miss G goes snooping through Fiamma's folder, she finds a typewritten letter in Spanish from Fiamma's father, and a handwritten translation attached to it. The film shows only a few glimpses of the English version, enough to give the reader an idea of what happened, but Spanish-speaking viewers can pause the film and read almost the entire Spanish letter. There it is explained in detail that Fiamma eloped with an older man, a neighbor, and brought a lot of shame and scandal on her family. Her father sent her to the school because he wanted to break up the young couple and to let the rumor mill tire itself out.
• Diagnosed by the Audience: Miss G. Possibly agoraphobia as she seems nervous during her trip to town and becomes almost panicked when she attracts the attention of some local louts.
• Tear Jerker: After being viciously beaten by her classmates, Fiamma slowly suffocates to death, begging the woman who molested her to give her the inhaler she needs to survive, only to hear Miss G essentially saying that she will die.
• The Woobie: Fiamma. In the beginning, she's bullied by Di and the other girls, terribly homesick and misses Pablo, the man she tried to elope with. Then, after being raped by Miss G, she's ostracized by a jealous Di who convinces the other girls to chase her through the forest and beat her up. This aggravates the poor girl's asthma to the point of death and the last thing she sees, after being punished for being raped, is her rapist with not a shred of guilt.
