YMMV / Cookie Run

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo:
    • One of Ananas Dragon Cookie's lines goes, "You call that a greeting? Bow. Deeper."
    • Just try thinking this line from Cotton Candy Cookie in another way.
"When I see your... Oh my!"
    • And Princess Cookie's "Shh...! Don't tell daddy!" too.
  • Alternate Character Interpretation:
    • Sea Fairy Cookie and the moon. Given some of her quotes in the games themselves, is her "love" for the moon itself? Or, because of the existence of Moonlight Cookie and the crescent moon she rides around on, could it mean something else?. The recent music video released with the official OST seems to allude to the latter.
    • Carrot Cookie's loading quotes typically get a version of this that are played for laughs. Does she want all the Cookies to work as hard as she has done since she is a farmer? Or is she secretly a supporter of communism?
    • Alchemist Cookie's Relationship Chart and Basic Jelly. Is she really joking about transmuting her brother into a mere juice? OR is she really serious enough to go through with it?
    • Some fans think Onion Cookie is crying because of her onion-esque hair. While others think that she's either Dead All Along or simply a Haunted Heroine whose crying either because she doesn't know she's dead or for the scary ghosts that haunt her.
    • Yogurt Cream Cookie's relationship with Lilac Cookie. Does Yogurt Cream suspect that Lilac isn't truly altruistic in protecting him? His relationship trust reads their bond as "Trust" but he also questions if Lilac is protecting him not helping that Lilac was actually hired by his older brother, Plain Yogurt, to kill him so he can get their father's riches. For Lilac's part, he does show signs of being more open to protect Yogurt Cream, and the In the Shadow of the Dunes update has him go back to his old thieving guild to cure Yogurt Cream of a sleeping poison. The video of Yogurt Cream's puppet show on the Cookie Run YouTube page muddles this quite a bit since he is aware that his brother wants to kill him but pretends to act dumb, and in the Shadow of the Dunes update he somehow dreamt that Lilac was acting more like a thief than a bodyguard, accurately describing the things Lilac had to do for Centipede Cookie.
  • Anti-Climax Boss: The early level versions of the bosses in the Spelunking Expeditions event were not very challenging, with only later levels upping the ante in difficulty, this is especially prevalent with the bat boss.
  • Awesome Music: The game boasts a fun soundtrack, so it's no surprise that, in December 2020, Devsisters finally implemented a system for players to play their favorite tracks on their phone.
    • DJ Cookie's Trial theme, Grand Cookie Party, is an electronic remix of Land 1 that's perfect for parties.
    • I Want You Every Day by Judy and Go for It by J Rabbit. The high quality animated music videos accompanying them both had a lot of fans hoping for a Cookie Run anime that uses them as the opening and ending themes respectively.
    • The Ocean: Sorbet Shark's Dream by Zenith is a beautiful sea ballad about Sorbet Shark hoping to explore the open sea. Now with an acapella version!
    • Lilac Cookie's Trial Theme is based on Yogurt Cream's own Trial but has a mystical feel that invokes a dancer in the desert and has many remixes. The Bake My Day rendition had many fans beg for a full copy.
    • The harp renditions of numerous tracks that end a Bake My Day video are quite heavenly to listen to.
  • Base-Breaking Character: While some find Milk Cookie endearing due to his kind personality and intriguing dynamic with Dark Choco Cookie, others proclaim that being a Nice Guy is all there is to him, and that his design, quotes, and interactions with certain characters are unintentionally racist.
  • Breather Level: Stage 45 in Cheerleader Cookie requires you to score points, five million for three stars. This doesn't sound that unusual, except it's one of the few stages that not only allows combi skills, it allows the entire set. Suffice to say, Power Creep has made this level absurdly easy for anyone who has invested enough time and effort to reach the stage.
  • Bragging Rights Option: A variety of limited time content can count as this. Players often leave these characters/costumes out in events where a Cookie can be selected as an icon, such as Spelunking Expeditions and Survival Run; usually to either show players who missed out on their stuff, confuse new players, or just to show that they are an experienced player/have been playing for a while.
    • Hello Kitty and her sister, Mimmy were only given out from November to December 2018. While Mimmy was given out for free by simply entering the event, Hello Kitty was harder to obtain, only by chance.
    • The costumes distributed during the Hello Kitty's Surprise Visit event also count as this. Strawberry Cookie and Roll Cake Cookie both got costumes that could be purchased with Hello Kitty Coins, while Hello Kitty's Strawberry Cookie costume can only be obtained by purchasing a package with the costume, costing USD $10 (or local equivalent).
    • The costume GingerBrave's First Grand Champion was distributed as a reward for passing the first round of the Grand Champion's League in February 2019 counts as this as well.
    • The limited edition Champion's League costumes introduced in September 2021 also count as this, as they each require 2,400 Season Point, which is a lot of Trophy Races.
  • Complacent Gaming Syndrome:
    • Combis that dominate the scoreboard vary just about every release, but there is one consistency: every, and we mean every, combi that you can see will be using the X-tra Hot Turbo Engine, due to giving a good speed boost (Better than the one given by Skates), and providing a shield on top speed (Which comes in faster than the Shield Bubble Gun), basically giving the player two treasures in one.
    • The moment a new cookie is released, expect it to appear handily in Trophy Race, regardless of actual scoring potential, simply because, well, it's new.
    • If a cookie's magic candy has the "+ points from all jellies" blessing available, it's going to be the most used blessing most of the time.
  • Contested Sequel: The Season 6 update, period. From the skill and point rebalance completely tipping the meta on its head, the capping of all Cookies and Pets (including the already notoriously hard to level-up Legendaries) to Level 15, a confusing new UI that is very easy to get lost in, the Invocation Cards that are borderline Pay To Win (Fixed in a patch where Invocation Tokens can now be purchased at the Breakout Shop, but still.) and Lilac’s redesign and Super Rare costume being considered garish at best and downright offensive at worst, it’s safe to say that this update wasn’t given a glowing reception.
  • Creator's Pet:
    • Muscle Cookie is generally one of the more disliked Cookies by the fanbase, usually for having a weird design or just being not the most viable character even by Rare cookie standards, and while he certainly does have his fans, he's not exactly charting any popularity polls. This doesn't stop Muscle Cookie from being inserted in events where he has no real relevancy such as Dreamy Cookieland.
    • Zombie Cookie is also not the most popular Cookie, but Devsisters can't seem to let them go, to the point of pairing Zombie Cookie up with the rest of the Common Cookies, and even having more overall screen time and appearances than characters such as GingerBright and Skater Cookie, usually appearing alongside them and Strawberry as if they're a common cookie... But they're not, they're very much a rare cookie.
  • Designated Villain:
    • While not evil per say, Fire Spirit is usually the one causing mischief in the comics (though the comics themselves are generally considered non-canon). He is also the one who started the events that led to the Wrath of the Dragon season in the LINE game.
    • Devil, Vampire, Pirate and Kumiho are also depicted as being "villainous" in the comics as well, as shown in this issue.
    • Literally every single guilty party in the Detective events (except for maybe Cherry and Werewolf in the second one (though to be fair, Werewolf Cookie was reluctant in doing so)) doesn't actually commit a real crime, and is instead outright arrested for being circumstantially blamed. Such "crimes" include things such as "grabbing something else", "looking away from an actual thief", and "talking".
    • Squid Ink is this in the Raging Tempest arc of the story mode, being framed as a villain despite the majority of their past appearances portraying them as a confused little kid who only takes shiny things so they have something to eat.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Aloe Cookie and Lilac Cookie, two cookies who were originally exclusive to cutscenes for events, both were heavily loved by fans and have even been asked to appear in the game proper. Devsisters have acknowledged this and in December 2020, the Newspaper event allowed players to decide who among those three (alongside Pinata and Pumpkin Cookie) should be Promoted to Playable in OvenBreak with Aloe Cookie coming to the game in the mid-May 2021 update and Lilac arriving in the July 2021 update of OvenBreak and the Soda Isles storyline of Kingdom. According to the Lilac reveal video, Lilac was the most voted NPC.
    • Artichoke Cookie, another cutscene cookie, also became popular due to their design to the point that many fans wanted them as the new cookie over Ananas Dragon and their wish was granted when Artichoke made it to Cookie Run: Puzzle World as a playable character.
    • Despite only appearing in the background of the VERY last stage of the LINE Cookie Run as well as not being a Cookie themselves, Sugar Swan seemed to have their own dedicated fans as well, evident from the fair amount of fanarts dedicated to them. And popular enough to the point some of the fans BEGGED Devsisters to add them to the game. While they have yet to appear in OvenBreak, the Sugar Swan makes an appearance in Kingdom, much to the pleasant surprise of its many fans. Fans rejoiced when Devsisters announced that Sugar Swan would be the focus for the October 2023 update.
  • Epileptic Trees:
    • Fans suggest that the Blue Dragon mentioned in Mango Cookie's story was the one who granted Sorbet Shark Cookie's wish to become a cookie since they're known to grant wishes. Then the Wishing Lotus Breakout story reveals that the Lotus Dragon acts more like a Lotus-Eater Machine, so there's no way Sorbet Shark would've gotten that wish from the likes of them. Kingdom would later reveal that it was Black Pearl Cookie who granted their wish.
    • Due to their relationships, fans think that General Jujube is either Peach Cookie's father or is somehow related to her.
  • Fanfic Fuel: With more than 100 Cookies that exist to this day, and the only vague hints of what the Cookie world is actually like, Cookie Run is quite the fanfiction writer's paradise ripe for allowing plenty of unique character interactions, that the game didn't touch on itself until Operation: Timeguard and Cookie Run: Kingdom had hit the scene, and to allow for some fan-made worldbuilding.
    • Speaking of Operation: Timeguard, it is built upon the idea of multiple timelines, particularly because Timekeeper Cookie is a possible future version of Croissant Cookie who is bored of being an engineer and decided to mess with the timestream for the lulz. This is just begging for fanfics.
    • Aloe Cookie's "Visitor From the Future" costume has a description of her going into the future to see Cyborg Cookie before looking somewhat robotic. What has she seen?
  • Fan Nickname:
    • Prior to his localization in late 2016, Rebel Cookie was called Monk Cookie by the fandom.
    • Churro Stump is called "Stumpy" by fans because of how it was initially called that in the Churro Cookie Reveal Video.
    • Much like Almond Cookie, fans have started calling Sea Fairy Cookie a wife because of how beautiful her voice and design was when she got announced for Cookie Run: Kingdom.
    • Again, like Almond Cookie, Eggnog Cookie was called "Daddy" by the fanbase for his muscular build.
    • Once Dr. Bones Cookie was revealed, the majority of fans called him Sans Cookie.
    • Choco Ball Cookie is called "Milo Cookie" because Milo is a chocolate drink that has football/soccer players shown on the products.
    • Prior to his name reveal, Lange du Chat Cookie was called "Saul Goodman Cookie". The event of Face The Trial! has also been called "Cookie Run Ace Attorney" with Lange du Chat even looking like Gaspar Clavin.
  • Fanon:
    • There are parts of the fanbase that headcanon both Sparkling Cookie and Apple Cookie as being related to each other (the more popular interpretation is that Sparkling is Apple's father) due to the both of them having similar color aesthetics * and their similarity to their gameplay style.* And yet this is despite the fact that neither of them are even in each other's relationship chart and Apple Cookie's actual parents/legal guardians are currently unconfirmed for the time being.
    • Almond Cookie being Walnut Cookie's father is a very popular headcanon in the fandom. Nearly every piece of work that features the two of them interacting with each other portrays them as father and daughter. This became a case of Ascended Fanon in the Butter Painting Affair update where they have a familial relationship and Kingdom confirmed that Almond is Walnut’s dad.
      • Similarly to the last two, Onion Cookie is either thought of to be Blackberry's daughter/little sister or that Blackberry's adopted her or they just have familal-like bond.
      • Due to Blackberry being mainly shipped with him, Adventurer Cookie is either Onion's father (adopted/biological/father figure) or an older brother figure.
    • In the same vein, fans like to think that Strawberry Crepe Cookie of Kingdom and Bell Pepper Cookie in this game would be rivals due to them being young children who have an interest in robotics but are on opposing sides (until the former's Heel–Face Turn anyhow).
    • It's a common theory that Cyborg Cookie, when they were still a full Cookie, used to be named something along the lines of "Palm Tree Cookie" or "Coconut Cookie" due to their big dreadlocks and green hair on the cover of Aloe’s research diary.
    • The popular headcanon of Sea Fairy Cookie being a lesbian.
  • Game-Breaker:
    • The original game had Herb Cookie. Originally, even after multiple patches, people found that pairing him with Cinnamon Cookie and using his max-level treasure could rack up millions of points in one go. Add in some revival treasures and you had a long running score machine that would get you atop the leaderboards fast.
    • In Ovenbreak, the leaderboards often vary in what cookie the top players use, but what stayed consistent long ago is that almost every top player used Magmabird. Magmabird has a huge variety of effects, including producing jellies, destroying obstacles and increasing the speed when you activate its ability, and also has the ability to provide a revival to both the main and relay cookie. Simply no other pet reached its level of versatility, not even fellow legendary pet Emerald Golem (Which is only really used with Soda Cookie on Breakout mode), so it's been rampant for a very long time since release.
    • Dark Enchantress was also particularly OP in Ovenbreak, especially after getting a Magic Candy and Super Epic near the tail-end of season 5. What really cemented her as this for the time being was when she was nerfed upon season 6’s release as part of a massive skill and point rebalance...and if anything became even more broken.
  • Genius Bonus: Lemon Cookie's electric powers allude to lemon batteries, in which a lemon's citric acid can be harnessed to conduct electricity.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: Cookie Run has had a fair share of unexpected popularity outside of its home country of South Korea.
    • The United States' side of the playerbase became even bigger of a userbase in late 2021 after Genshin Impact had a controversial anniversary update. If looking on Google Trends, the word "cookie run" quadruples that of "쿠키런" in late 2021.
    • Russia, despite having its community officially disowned after the Ice Candy update in Cookie Run: OvenBreak (which dropped support for many languages, including Russian), continues to have a large userbase that rivals that of the Japanese community (the smallest officially supported language community), and have remained dedicated for years. Social media posts and groups of Russian players continue to get hundreds upon thousands of likes and views.
  • Goddamned Bats: Some of the obstacles qualify. They're small, come in large groups, and can be difficult to dodge even when following the path of jellies:
    • While Ovenbreak has many more examples than the original LINE Cookie Run, LCR still has them in certain stages of Special Episode 2, in little ice snowflakes.
    • Little flying globs for various different Ovenbreak stages.
    • Actual bats in stages 1-3 and 1-5 of Breakout (though they are relatively easy to dodge, given that they're only part of early stages).
    • Flying fish in Breakout stages 2-8 & 2-9.
    • Brown birds in Breakout stage 3-2 (and Arena 2 for the Knight Season of the Champion's League).
    • Arrows in Breakout stage 3-4 and 3-6.
    • Fire birds in Breakout stage 3-5.
    • Fuzzy Devil Bats in Breakout Stage 4-2.
  • Growing the Beard: The event stories in Ovenbreak, such as The Lost City of Sugarteara and Cyborg Menace, really show that Devsisters can make compelling stories and characters.
    • The 4th Anniversary event, Operation: Timeguard is considered one of the best storylines of the game due to its unique time-travel plot, Croissant Cookie's charater development and relationship to Timekeeper Cookie and the nature of time and destiny. In fact it was so popular that Devsisters made another TBD-inspired storyline for January 2022 — Mission! Protect the Future! — focusing on both Timekeeper, Croissant and String Gummy Cookie.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Yu Gi Oh ARCV has a character named Dennis, who is a Stage Magician with long, ginger hair. A year later, we have Cinnamon Cookie, who has a similar character description.
    • In 2020, some cookies got costumes based off of Alice in Wonderland. In July 2022, Cookie Run Kingdom would have a crossover with Disney and one of the characters happens to be Alice herself. Bonus point is that three of the cookies getting costumes in that gatcha were Strawberry (Kitty Punk/Cheshire Cat), Knight (Ace of Spades) and Princess (Princess of Hearts) and all three of them are playable cookies in Kingdom.
    • Also in the year 2020 came Popping Candy Cookie and the Cake POPs, which were based on K-pop bands. Come two years later in Cookie Run Kingdom and there's now a crossover with none other than #1 K-pop band BTS.
  • Ho Yay:
    • Rockstar Cookie of all people calls Kiwi Cookie his "true soulmate" in the Relationship Chart.
    • Lime Cookie's heavy idolization of Orange Cookie, to the point of her using a similar smash ability to hers and disliking Lemon simply for being a childhood friend of hers makes it seem like she has a crush on Orange Cookie. Lime x Orange is one of the most popular ships as a result of this.
    • Yogurt and Lilac's trust for one another is seen as this, particularly the latter's original mission to kill Yogurt before he's grown attached to his target. In the Shadow of the Dunes storyline is about Lilac going back to his old thieving guild in order to find a cure for Yogurt Cream, and the end has Yogurt Cream hoping to dream of taking the two of them on a magic carpet ride (to which Lilac smiles).
  • Les Yay:
    • Moonlight and Sea Fairy is an incredibly popular ship between the two thanks to the latter's quotes about the moon and for looking at Moonlight with a loving gaze in the "I Want You Every Day" music video. When it was revealed in Cookie Run Kingdom that the two would be having a Cookie Bond story, fans became ecstatic on whether or not it would make the ship official.
    • Starfruit and Pomegranate gained steam during the Pantheon of Fate storyline, due to how Starfruit is immediately open to Pomegranate and is quick to call her a friend.
    • A few members of the fandom ship Cotton Candy and Chili Pepper due to the fact that Cotton has a relationship with Chili Pepper in her chart and the music video for "Go for it!" has the two of them together.
  • LGBT Fanbase:
    • The game seems to have a huge following with the LGBT community, especially on Tumblr, for its positive representation of nonbinary characters.
    • Of course, Devsisters has appealed to them by confirming Rockstar's possibly-romantic relationship with Kiwi on his Relationship Chart and giving DJ Cookie a bi rainbow motif.
    • Almond Cookie is shown to attract both male and female fans for his handsome and rugged looks to the point that his Super Epic costume, Commissioner of Parfaedia made him even more attractive to the fanbase. Then his Constable Whiskers pet made him more loved for being a Kind Hearted Cat Lover. And then the English dub for Kingdom ramped it even further with numerous fans — male and female — falling for his suave voice, befitting a hardboiled detective.
    • Lilac Cookie gained more fans after his new (feminine) attire came out, giving him an androgynous appeal... and had been given the same treatment for Almond Cookie, with comments from the fanbase that went crazy for his hot-looking design. His Midsummer Bliss outfit shows off delicate gold and pinks and even reveals he's a dancer and, as you might have guessed, made fans go bananas over his costume. And again, just like with Almond, fans are in love with his baritone voice.
    • Not even a minute to his reveal, Eggnog Cookie was being fawned over for being a "bear" due to his rugged Santa-esque apperance and muscular frame with as much love and praise given to Almond Cookie.
  • Love to Hate: Dark Enchantress Cookie, by far, is one of the most beloved cookies just for being both one of the two genuinely villainous cookies (the other being Pomegranate Cookie, but she has no qualities deemed good enough for the fanbase to actually like her).
  • Low-Tier Letdown: Due to how the meta currently works in Cookie Run, this is unsurprisingly bound to happen, but no cookie has it worse than Pomegranate Cookie. She was meant to be purely used for the trophy race mode as her main gimmick is dropping a large-scoring jelly upon relay... However, she ends up completely outclassed as her low-scoring potential makes this practically worthless, and her magic candy doesn't help her much better. Hilariously, Pomegranate has actually been one of the most buffed cookies—having been buffed twice throughout the game's history, one as a stealth buff and one as a more "proper" buff with her costume... and neither of them helped, with her only seeing use on one Land's End map which was leaving in 14 days anyways, making her buff all for nothing as the new maps made her totally worthless. It's a pretty nasty sign when the wiki's strategy section tells you that she is to be avoided for use in Breakout entirely, especially when you have to deal with her trial...
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • The "Hoo hoo!" sound Herb Cookie makes when he slides.
    • Comparing Herb Cookie to weed.
    • Comparing Rockstar Cookie to Komaeda.
    • Sparkling Cookie's long legs.

  • Moe: Most of the cookies and their pets, which is in no small part to their inherently adorable designs, but some of the cutest cookies include (but are by no means limited to):
    • Cream Puff Cookie! Her sweet and warmhearted nature, and adorable clumsiness, and overall cuteness as both a Cute Witch and a cookie in general makes her very endearing and a vast majority of Cookie Run fans love her for it!
    • Spinach Cookie is a warm-hearted and adorable cookie who loves vegetables. She's so cute that, when she got an Epic Costume during the August 2021 update, most fans stated that they're using their Rainbow Cubes/Crystals specifically for that one as opposed to the Super Epic costumes of Carrot and Beet Cookie.
    • Bellflower Cookie is another worthy contender due to her adorable and wholesome Bespectacled Cutie appearance and for being sweet and warmhearted like Cream Puff Cookie and Spinach Cookie before her.
    • Sorbet Shark became a fan favorite for their looks, their speech patterns, and their background inspired by The Little Mermaid. When they got a voice for Kingdom, fans couldn't stop gushing to how adorable they sounded and left a bunch of comments with Sorbet Shark Cookie's speech patterns in every post that had Sorbet Shark in it. Just have a gander in the comments section.
    • For an old man, Ginseng Cookie actually becomes this when his eyes find a ginseng root and his sparkly anime eyes that he makes (namely when he revives himself with his Magic Candy ability during gameplay) just add to his charm.
    • Sugar Glass Cookie, from the Labyrinth Of Remembrance event mode, looks very cute and precious thanks to her adorable looking design and for her characteristics that are befitting of a Woobie.
    • The Cookiemals are a trio of adorable little animals who see themselves as the most powerful cookies in the world with many fans wanting to just hug them to death. They get Epic Costumes that make them dress up as Christmas ornaments or decorated in flowers that make them even more adorable.
    • Lollipop Cookie is an adorable (toy) cookie that wants to bring smiles by working at a Toy Shop with Butterbear Cookie, to the point that her announcement video itself can't help but comment on her cuteness.
    • Pond Dino Cookie is just as cute as their arguable Distaff Counterpart Sorbet Shark Cookie, if not moreso. Being a cute baby dinosaur-cookie hybrid with endearing Baby Talk speech patterns and a personality full of curiosity and innocence does wonders for their cuteness! It gest to the point that Dino-Sour Cookie can't help but melt over how adorable they are!
  • Most Wonderful Sound:
    • Hoo hoo!
    • On a related note in Cookie Run Kingdom, many fans were excited to hear Herb Cookie's English dub voice being done by Khoi Dao (who also voices Albedo in Genshin Impact).
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    "HEAVEN IS WAITIИG"
    • Worse yet, one of the push notifications during the event sounds almost as if Jelly Walker Angel Cookie attacked the writer.
  • Scrappy Mechanic: Season 6 was full of the brim with this.
    • Man, where do we even begin with Invocation Cards? The Season 6 announcement said that Invocation Cards will freshen up the gameplay... Buuuut this wasn't the case for many players who tried it, they immediately hated the feature due to being extremely unnecessary and that they are Pay To Win (This was fixed in a patch where Invocation Tokens can now be purchased at the Breakout Shop.), with many people stating in the comments of official posts that if Devsisters doesn't get rid of Invocation Cards, they will quit Cookie Run for good. This got to the point where actual trucks with customized LCD displays were parked outside Devsisters' HQ. Naturally, a few days later, they announced plans to explicitly forbid the Invocation Cards in most modes, including just about every competitive mode aside from Custom Run.
    • The Land's End/Champions League merger has made things way more frustrating for players than it needs to be. For starters, there are these Promotion Missions which need to be completed before players can reach the next rank, most notably having to reach 3rd-1st Place in one of three chances depending on the tier (Initially, you had to get 1st place for every tier) or else the player will lose trophies and will have to try again, which is a tall order given the game's notorious Meta problem, and prior to the March 2022 update, the unnecessary penalty of losing trophies/ranks if not running in the mode for 7 days. Luckily, if you get promoted to the next rank and lose enough trophies to be downgraded to the previous rank, you don't have to do the same Promotion Mission again, but the old Champions League didn't have this problem in the first place and nor should it!
  • Stoic Woobie:
    • String Gummy Cookie's past had him lost in a time pocket, displaced from time itself and saved by Director Croissant Cookie. He travels to stop Croissant Cookie from creating her portal devices that uninteintionally caused his future all while he notes that he doesn't know what he'll do after his mission is done. Once time is restored, one ending allows him to see Director Croissant Cookie who states that she will go down with the erased timelines and that String Gummy should go back to see her past self and Timekeeper Cookie so that he can have a bright future ahead. He begs for her to come back but she turns into dust with a smile. He then returns to the present time, lamenting how Director Croissant Cookie saved him.
    • Peperocino Cookie's backstory as to who he's trying to save. It's his son who stubbornly raced ahead to conquer the Dragon's Valley, refusing to take his father's hand before falling to his supposed death. He won't stop until he reunites with Habanero Cookie.
  • Sweet Dreams Fuel: Overall, the theme of the game, which consists of adorable cookies running and playing together, can just give people a fuzzy feeling on the inside.
  • Take That, Scrappy!: The 2022 April Fool’s event Invocate the Invocation Cards is basically a massive joke at the expense of Cookie Run’s most infamous Scrappy Mechanic by having the player constantly burn them to defeat enemies.
  • Tear Jerker: Now has its own page.
  • That One Sidequest:
    • Pomegranate Cookie's Trial. Due to Pomegranate Cookie only really being useful in a relay, the player has to dodge her Pomegranate Jelly (which, due to the jelly becoming magnetic, is in most cases impossible), lest all the precious bear and regular jellies be knocked down to one point per piece. This doesn't help the fact that Pomegranate Jellies are likely going to pop up in the worst places, such as right in the arc of a jump to avoid an obstacle, or overlapping a Giant or Coin Jelly. The player basically has to invest in her Pet and Magic Candy over the cookie herself aside from base energy, and opening chests and collecting ingredients are their own hassles in themselves.
    • Upgrading the magic candies for the Legendary Cookie proved to be really challenging and frustrating as they all require materials that are very hard to acquire and can't be crafted. The blow is softened a bit by the fact that upgrading them has a 100% success rate at all levels and there have been shops that allow players to get better chances to obtain the ingredients. As of January 2021, their Cookie Trials will have a low chance of spawning their materials and the revamped Season 6 Story Mode also have certain levels carry their magic ingredients.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!:
    • The Champions League/Land's End Merger. Scroll above to Scrappy Mechanic for details.
    • The removal of Bonus Missions in Cookie Trials starting from Hydrangea Cookie's in the August 2021 update made it much harder for players to rack up high amounts of ingredients to create and upgrade their respective Magic Candies. However, with the removal of Magic Candy upgrade success rates in the March 2022 update, this is no longer a large issue.
    • Just when the fanbase thought this game couldn't get any worse, things took a massive nosedive when Devsisters decided to "simplify" the Magic Laboratory and Magic Candy mechanics by having the ingredients be limited to just blueprints and sugar crystals. It seems like a good idea on paper, but the execution is a different story entirely: being that a lot of the items and legendary magic candies require a good number of Diamond Sugar Crystals, and they require a 7 day wait period upon creation for even just one of them, it is a complete waste of time, and making the Magic Potions, Chests, Eggs, and other things are now far harder than they need to be since you can't purchase any of the blueprints with Magic Powder. But this is just the tip of the iceberg, as Ceruulean of Youtube can attest to!
  • Underused Game Mechanic: Secret combis were secretly (duh) introduced with Pitaya Dragon's update, in which Pitaya has a combi with Dragon Tail (knight's pet) in which Pitaya's ability acts completely differently, being focused more on distance than scoring... however, after this, the secret combi mechanic has never been used beyond Pitaya, and every cookie released since then has had just 1 combi with 1 pet, with the only deviation from this 1:1 setup at all since being that Croissant and Timekeeper sharing the same pet, though this doesn't impact their abilities beyond scoring, and is outwardly stated by the game itself rather than being hidden from the menu, making it not much of a secret.
  • Unexpected Character:
    • Not many were expecting a crossover event with Hello Kitty in late-November 2018. Reactions were generally positive at first, however, before being panned by the fanbase for its incredibly paywall-based tactics.
    • The Secrets of the Hidden City event had a cameo appearance by Licorice Cookie from Kingdom, well before he was even confirmed to become a playable Cookie in April 2021 with the Battle of Fates.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion:
    • When Millennial Tree Cookie was released, quite a few comments about how bewildered they were that he wasn't female popped up quickly, given his feminine appearance. This was averted in Kingdom when voice samples reveals his very deep voice.
    • Aloe Cookie was confused to be male due to their handsome appearance, and pretty clear relationship with Cyborg Cookie, who was confirmed to be a girl. It wasn't until the Super Cookiebots update, nearly 2 years after the AI Run event, where it was revealed that Aloe is female as well.
    • Lilac Cookie's intial gender was presumably female due to the short hair, eyelashes and purple color scheme and the new outfit for them screamed feminine with the flowers in the hair and attire. The Season 6 update reveals Lilac is a male.
  • The Woobie:
    • Onion Cookie. Poor thing. Thanks to the fact that her tears are mostly onion juice, she is physically unable to stop crying. Onion's also haunted by ghosts, which she's deathly afraid of (and is pretty much all but stated to be one herself).
    • Squid Ink Cookie. They experience Involuntary Shapeshifting into a giant kraken during which they scream in pain. Other Cookies hate them for the destruction they cause in this state, but they have no recollection of anything that happened in this form. In their relationship chart with Pirate Cookie, they don't understand why Pirate is so angry at them.
    • Matcha Cookie. An attempt at a Dark Enchantress Cookie clone that went wrong, leaving her incomplete. While she isn't evil like her finished relative, she's heavily broken for it and is constantly laughing to herself in darkness without much a clue of what's going on. Add to that that it's implied her relative Dark Enchantress doesn't even like her and got Pomegranate as a substitute, it being implied that she is still actually semi-aware of her surroundings, it being explicitly shown she has very few friends just because of her association, and the Clue event having her be branded "guilty" over an actual accident where she is still punished all the same, Matcha just can never catch a break... Which is why fanfiction writers tend to do exactly that if she's the focus.
