• Diagnosed by the Audience: Several characters say that Keiko's "not normal" and she even agrees with it in narration, but the novel never names a specific disorder. However, her lack of social skills, difficulty understanding arbitrary social conventions and obsession with a very narrow subject (convenience stores), lead some readers to interpret her as having autism or a similar disorder.
• Jerkass Woobie: Shiraha is an asshole, but he does have a genuinely sympathetic moment when he says that what he wants, more than anything, is to just hide from the world, never be seen or spoken to, and just breathe and do nothing. Forever. His problems are often of his own making, but still, no one deserves to feel that way.
